Perched on the runway ready for takeoff is the 'automatic' all-weather Republic F-105D Thunderchief fighter-bomber, built by Republic Aviation Corp., Farmingdale, L.I., N.Y. The mach 2 (twice the speed of sound) fighter-bomber is packed with advanced electronic equipment that enables its pilot to preform a round trip, low-or-high-level bombing mission in any weather, day or night, over any terrain, without ever seeing the ground. The big, powerful fighter-bomber can carry nuclear or thermonuclear weapons, guided or unguided missiles and it equipped with an automatic 20 milimeter cannon with a rate of fire of 6000 rounds per minute. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney J-75 turbojet engine, which develops over 20000 pounds of thrust with afterburner, the single-seat jet is scheduled for service with the US Air Force Tactical Air Command in the US and Europe.
