28. oktober 1944 kom Hitlers ordre at befolkningen skulle tvangsevakueres. Fristen var satt til 10. november. Inntil da hadde det vært en kampanje for frivillig evakuering.
Alle tilgjengelige båter ble tatt i bruk og pakket fulle med folk. Det ble også rekvirert båter fra Troms for å hente evakuerte. Alle måtte av gårde og bare med det de kunne bære med seg. 30 000 mennesker ble evakuert fra Finnmark, det var halvparten av befolkningen. 25 000 personer klarte å stikke seg bort og overlevde vinteren i gammer, huler eller under et båtskrog kledd med torv. På Magerøya var det rundt 100 personer som gjemte seg i fjellet.
Etter tvangsevakueringen skulle den brente jords taktikk brukes mot russernes fremmarsj samt hindre britene og amerikanerne å lande i denne landsdelen.
Ødeleggelsene i Finnmark og Nord-Troms var omfattende. På Magerøya ble den 6. november Skarsvåg, Kamøyvær, Tufjord og Gjesvær brent. Den 11. fulgte Nordvågen og den 13. begynte brenningen av Honningsvåg som fortsatte til og med lillejulaften.
Da Tyskland kapitulerte den 8. mai 1945 var Nordkapps befolkning spredt over hele landet. Tross miner, ødelegging og treneringen fra myndighetenes side, som ønsket en mer ordnet hjemreise, kom folk tilbake sommeren 1945.
