Unsetåa kommer fra Finnstadsjøen, øst for Fonnåsfjellet, i grensetraktene mellom gamle Øvre Rendal herred og Brydalen i Tynset. Etter drøyt to mil renner Unsetåa sammen med Tysla, som kommer fra Tylldalen i Tynset kommune. Sammen danner de to åene elva Nordre Rena, som fører vannet videre sørover hoveddalføret i Rendalen mot Lomnessjøen og Storsjøen. Den øvre delen av Unsetåa, som lokalt kalles Finnstadåa, renner for det meste jevnt og rolig, men passerer også Finnstadfallene. Videre går Unsetåa i forholdsvis slakt terreng til et stykke nedenfor Unset-gardene, der strømhastigheten tiltar i et område der åa renner mellom store sand- og grusmæler. Litt lengre nede møter den fast fjell. Her passerer den trange gjel, hvor elvefaret er meget vanskelig tilgjengelig. I den nederste delen, sør for Finnåsfjellet, før Unsetåa og Tysla renner sammen, er det et flatt slettelandskap, som i gamle dokumenter kalles «Marken», på moderne kart «Morken». Her skapte det problemer, både for tømmerfløtinga og jordbruket, at flommene i Unsetåa førte med sand, grus og stein som ble liggende ei åfaret her nede på flata. På denne måten ble åa svært grunn, og i flomperioder brøt den lett ut over sine bredder og la igjen sand og grus også på tilstøtende dyrket eller dyrkbar mark. I flomperiodene førte ikke Unsetåa bare med seg vann, sand, grus og stein – den var også fløtingsvassdrag. Når åa brøt ut over sine ordinære bredder fulgte mye av fløtingstømmeret med, og konsekvensen ble da at fløterne måtte bære tunge, vasstrukne stokker tilbake til åfaret når flommen var over.
Etter 2. verdenskrig kom det maskinelt utstyr som gjorde det mulig å gjøre store inngrep i vassdragene. Dette var en sak som det var interesse for også i Rendalen. I 1951 søkte grunneiere i Unset- og Finnstaddalen, sammen med fløtingsforeningene for Brya og Finnstadåa Vassdragsvesenet om bistand til å få senket Unsetåa ved Økvarvet og Nekstrømmen. Samtidig få kanalisert vassdraget mellom Storbråten og Nekstrømmen. Dette var en viktig sak for jordbrukere i området. Det ville sikre om lag 530 dekar god jord, hvorav 360 alt var dyrket.
Høsten 1954 startet Glomma fellesfløtingsforening i samarbeid med Vassdragsvesenet oppmudringsarbeider i det området som ble kalt Marken eller Morken. Påfølgende sommer ble det satt bulldosere og lastebiler inn i arbeidet. Bulldoserne skyflet til side stein og grus fra åfaret, og lastebilene hentet stein fra ei ur ovenfor Hågenstad ved kommunesenteret Bergset. Denne steinen skulle legges langs sidene på det nye åfaret, som «plastring» som skulle forebygge nye elvebrudd. Tiltakene kostet Glomma fellesfløtingsforening 229 000 kroner, en stor sum i midten av 1950-åra. De nevnte inngrepene i Unsetåa gav sikret imidlertid ingen varig løsning på problemene. I 1957 kom det en ny storflom. Flommen rev med seg 150 meter av en dam eller flomvoll i Morken, og store mengder sand og grus ble spredd ut over elvesletta. Flommen skapte for øvrig også menneskelig dramatikk. To ungdommer på eiendommen Myrvang var aleine hjemme, og de måtte reddes ved i båt mens flommen var på det kraftigste. Nå tok Vasdragsvesenet affære. De tok kontakt med Industridepartementet og påpekte at elva truet med å ødelegge eksisterende forbygninger og betydelige arealer med flat, dyrket eller dyrkbar mark. Vassdragsvesenet ønsket derfor å utføre sikringsarbeider over en strekning på om lag ti kilometer. Prosjektet ble kostnadsberegnet til 720 000 kroner. Saken ble sendt videre til Finansdepartementet, som foreslo at Stortinget skulle bevilge 500 000. Rikspolitikerne var villige til å satse på dette tiltaket. De forutsatte imidlertid at det også var en viss lokal interesse, som måtte komme til uttrykk gjennom «distriktsbidrag» som skulle dekke en sjettedel av kostnadene. Dette ble løst ved at Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening skjøt til 59 000 kroner, og at skogeierne langs vassdraget aksepterte at det ble lagt en avgift på 1 krone per kubikkmeter fløtingstømmer i Unsetåa inntil man hadde betalt inn 45 000 kroner. Dermed gjensto det bare 16 000 kroner, som man forventet at grunneierne eller kommunen skulle bidra med.
Hovedprosjektet i 1958 dreide seg om å skyfle 80 000 kubikkmeter masse ut av elveløpet og steinsetting av åas bredder med 9 600 kubikkmeter stein. I tillegg ønsket man å få deler av åfaret litt høyere oppe i Unsetåa tilbake til et løp det hadde hatt før et elvebrudd som oppsto under en flom i 1934. Der skulle det flyttes 70 000 kubikkmeter masse, og legges på plass 7 000 kubikkmeter steinkledning. Denne gangen ble steinen hentet fra et brudd ved Midtskogen, 12-13 kilometer fra arbeidsstedet.
Heller ikke de arbeidene som ble gjort i 1958 løste problemene helt. Åa fortsatte nemlig å føre med seg sand, grus og stein fra målene i Unset-grenda. Massen la seg i å- og elvefarene i det flatere dalføret nedenfor, og i flomperioder gikk det også ut over dyrket mark. I løpet av 1960-åra kom det imidlertid bilveg på vestsida av åa i Unset. Dermed ble det mulig å nå også mælene som massene kom fra med moderne anleggsmaskiner. Vinteren 1968-69 ble det derfor igangsatt et nytt prosjekt som dreide seg om å plastre åløpet gjennom disse mælområdene med stein fra Midtskogen, for å binde sand, grus og steinmassene der hvor breen etter istida hadde latt dem ligge.

Da skylte de rennende vannmassene med seg stedlig matjord og la i stedet igjen sand og grus, til skade for jordbruket. De stadige elvebruddene var også et problem for tømmerfløterne, for stokkene ble ofte ført langt vekk fra åløpet og måtte seinere bæres tilbake dit, noe som var både tungt og tidkrevende. Dette var bakgrunnen for at det i 1950- og 60-åra ble satt moderne anleggsmaskiner inn i arbeidet med å mudre opp, rette ut og sikre faret i denne delen av Unsetåa (se mer informasjon under fanen «Opplysninger»).
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte mange av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert.
