Veiviseren ble satt opp på Bodø flyplass i forbindelse med SAS’ første flygning over Nordpolen den 24. mai 1954. Turen gikk fra Oslo, via Bodø flyplass og videre over Nordpolen til Fairbanks og Tokyo. Den ga en oversikt over selskapets ulike destinasjoner verden over – med angitt flytid. Veiviseren ble oppdatert i 1960, da DC-8-33 ble tatt i bruk på ruta København – Tokyo.
SAS’ «Midnattssol-rute» ble åpnet natt til lørdag den 29. mai 1954. Ruta ble fløyet i sommermånedene med ankomst Bodø like før midnatt og retur kl. 04.20. De såkalte "rundreisepassasjerene" reiste videre med Hurtigruten.
Bodø turistforening fikk etter hvert ansvaret for de lokale arrangementene som var inkludert i billettprisen. Passasjerene kunne enten få et besøk på Turisthytta på Rønvikfjellet, hvor de ble servert «midnatt-lunsj» og underholdt med folkemusikk- og dans, eller en tur til Saltstrømmen eller Geitvågen, alt etter været. I løpet av den første sommersesongen hadde over 200 turister besøkt Bodø og midnattssola. Ruta ble avviklet i 1965.
