Det første lenseanlegget ved Nes ble etablert etter at trelasthandlerne i 1852 vedtok å flytte sin sorteringslense fra Lindhol til Buskelsrud [navnet staves også Buskilsrud] og Nes, cirka tre kilometer lengre nede i vassdraget. Lenseanlegget her sto ferdig våren 1853, og det var finansiert og skulle drives av det trelasthandlerselskapet som den gang ble kalt «Directionen for Tømmerhandelen nedenfor Mørkfos» (seinere «Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion»). Trelasthandlerne inngikk kontrakter med grunneierne på gardene Buskelsrud, Huseby og Lysåker på Eidsberg-sida av elva, og med eierne av gardene Nes, Foss og Skipperud i Skiptvet for å kunne disponere vannet med tilstøtende strandarealer. Buskelsrud og Nes lense ble på noen måter et mer moderne og rasjonelt lenseanlegg enn det man hadde hatt ved Lindhol. Der ble tømmeret, etter at det var sortert etter påhogde kjøpermerker, ledet inn på grunt vann hvor det ble «låket». Dette innebar at stokkene ble samlet i flåter, tolv i bredden, og sammenføyd ved hjelp av rajer gjennom «øynene» i stokkendene på virke som var hankekjørt i skogen eller i kilekryss i endene på stokker som manglet slike endehull. Buskelsrud og Nes lense fra 1852-1853 ble utstyrt med «lommer» eller «båser» for tømmersorteringa, og med flytebrygger for låkinga. I den øvre delen av anlegget ble alle løse stokker som kom flytende samlet opp i ei beholdningslense. Derfra ble tømmeret sluppet suksessivt ned i sorteringsanleggene, som det fantes ett av på hver side av elva. Begge hadde imidlertid bare 11 lommer, og etter hvert som det ble stadig flere tømmerkjøpere, måtte lensearbeiderne etter hvert «stikke» tømmer med to og tre ulike merker, fortrinnsvis til kjøpere med små tømmervolumer i vassdraget, inn i samme lomme. Fra disse ble tømmeret, merke for merke, tatt opp på spesielle flåtebrygger og «låket» (flåtelagt) «Flak» med tolv sammenlåkte stokker ble deretter ført med strømmen ned til «flåteplasser», der 180 flak – 15 i lengden og 12 i bredden – ble sammenføyd til «føringer», noe som er antydet på kartet. Ved Buskilsrud og Nes lense var det ikke først og fremst strømmen i elva som skapte problemer for lensedrifta, slik det hadde vært ved Lindhol. Ved Buskelsrud og Nes var det vinden og det presset den øvde på stadig større tømmervolumer som var et påtrengende problem. For å beskytte anlegget mot vind ble det satt opp en del vindskjermer, noe som også framgår av kartet. Buskelsrud og Nes lense ble bygd i en periode med ekspanderende tømmerhandel i Glommavassdraget, blant annet som følge av at de reguleringene sagbruksnæringa hadde vært underlagt ble endret i 1854 og 1860. Kapasiteten i sorteringsanleggene ved Buskelsrud og Nes ble derfor, som antydet, tidlig et problem. Etter noen få sesonger ble det etablert ei «hjelpelense» ved Furuholmen i Varteig, om lag ti kilometer lengre nede i elveløpet. Dermed kunne et utvalg av merker slippes gjennom Buskelsrud og Nes lense, og føres videre i ringbommer til Furuholmen, for sortering der. Et annet stort problem ved Buskelsrud og Nes var altså at lensekonstruksjonene hadde lett for å svikte når stadig større tømmerkvanta under press fra vinden trykket på. Fra 1860-åra ble derfor hele lensedriften flyttet til Furuholmen i Varteig.
Først etter bygginga av en tømmertunnel mellom Isnesfjorden og Visterflo i Glommas vestre løp i perioden 1905-1908 ble det igjen bygd ei ny lense ved Nes. Denne gangen ble Neslensa bygd like nedenfor Nestangen. Den nye lensa var epokegjørende i den forstand at den ikke var forankret i pæler, som var svakest når vann- og tømmermengdene var størst, med vaierfester. Denne løsningen ble seinere kopiert ved mange lenseanlegg i Norden. Den nye Neslensa ble bygd med sikte på at man skulle få kapasitet til å sortere 72 ulike kjøpermerker, samt i tillegg ei viss dimensjonssortering. Lensa fikk fire parallelle avdelinger, to og to parvis. Etter ei viss grovsortering øverst ble stokkene sortert inn i «lommer» på sidene av disse kanalløpene etter påhogde merker. Når lommene fyltes ble tømmeret sluppet tilbake til renna, slik at det fløt ned til mosemaskinene, hvor det ble presset i hop og bundet sammen ved hjelp av vaiere. Så ble «mosene» sluppet ut under «brøkkerbrua» og fortøyd på nedsida av anlegget, der de etter hvert ble hentet ved hjelp av slepebåter. Den nye Neslensas store svakhet var vindeksponeringa, som kunne føre tømmeret på avveger, slik at det måtte kostbare oppsamlingsaksjoner til. Dette var, sammen med at reguleringer i vassdraget innskrenket lagringsplassen for tømmer ovenfor lensene, argumenter for flytting av virksomheten til Glennetangen i Skiptvet. Denne flyttinga ble realisert i 1938. Dermed ble den avbildete Neslensa nedlagt og fjernet. Dette fotografiet er antakelig tatt en av de siste sesongene den var i drift.

Løstømmeret som kom drivende med strømmen ble fanget opp i ei beholdningslense i den øvre enden av anlegget. Derfra ble stokkene sluppet i kontrollerte mengder inn i sorteringsanlegget, hvor det drev langsomt nedover med strømmen. Neslensa hadde to sideornete avdelinger, bygd to og to, parvis. Langsmed «rennene» i disse avdelingene sto det lensearbeidere med fløterhaker og trakk stokker med samme påhogde kjøpermerke inn i de samme «lommene», «båser» på sidene av de langsgående renneløpene. Etter hvert som lommene ble fulle, ble de åpnet, slik at innholdet fløt ned mot mosemaskinene. Der ble tømmeret presset ihop ved hjelp av vinsjdrevne moseapparater og bundet ihop ved hjelp av vaiere. Deretter ble «mosene» - buntene - sluppet ut på nedsida av lenseanlegget og fortøyd, i påvente av at det kom en slepebåt for å buksere tømmerslep, enten mot Oppsund ved Sarpsborg i det østre elveløpet eller mot Isnesfjorden og tømmertunnelen i det vestre løpet. Dette fotografiet skal være fra innløpet til sorteringslensa, som skal ha vært nykonstruert da fotografiet ble tatt i 1934, bare tre-fire år før Nes lense ble avviklet til fordel for et nytt anlegg ved Furuholmen eller Glennetangen, noen kilometer lengre nede i vassdraget. Her ser vi lensearbeidere i aktivitet med fløterhaker på bruer og flåteganger, arbeidsplattformene langs «rennene» (kanalene) hvor tømmeret fløt langsomt videre nedover i anlegget.
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette innebar at historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. Materialet ble enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
