Den 24. mai 1953 lettet DC-6B "Leif Viking" fra Oslo flyplass med retning Tokyo. Flyet var chartret av Forsvarsdepartementet for transport av avløsningspersonell på det norske felthospitalet i Korea (NORMASH). Norge bidro med humanitær hjelp i Korea i perioden 1951 - 1954. Flyturen gikk via Bodø, Fairbanks og Shema. I Bodø hadde representanter fra både sivile og militære myndigheter møtt opp på flyplassen i anledning mellomlandingen. Det ble holdt en liten mottakelse i ekspedisjonen, mens flybesetningen inntok lunsj i flyrestauranten.
Scandinavian Airlines System
Konkurransen på de interkontinentale flyrutene var hard og tvang de skandinaviske nasjonale flyselskapene til å etablere et samarbeid. SAS ble stiftet i 1946.
SAS var det første selskapet som opprettet regulære passasjerruter over nordpolområdet. De gjennomførte en rekke testturer og charterturer i perioden 1952 – 1954, før de åpnet ruta mellom Skandinavia og Los Angeles den 15. november 1954 og Tokyo 24. februar 1957.
Storsirkelrutene.
Den korteste avstanden mellom to punkter på en kule vil alltid gå langs en storsirkel. Alle meridianer og ekvator er storsirkler. Dette betydde at langdistanserutene mellom Skandinavia og den tids mest folkerike områder i den industrialiserte verden gikk over et øde Arktis. Den sivile luftfartens erobring av området bød på en rekke utfordringer; hverken magnetkompasset eller vanlige kart kunne brukes til å navigere etter i polområdene. Dessuten fantes det få landingsplasser.
Polarnavigasjon.
Navigatøren Einar Sverre Pedersen var en av pådriverne i SAS for å få etablert rutene over polområdet. Gjennom et samarbeid med det amerikanske instrumentfirmaet Bendix, fikk SAS tilvirket en spesialgyro - «Polar Path» gyro-system - som løste problemet med magnetkompasset. Samtidig tok de i bruk såkalte grid-kart. Dette sammen med tradisjonell astronavigasjon ledet veien langs de nye transpolare kommersielle rutene.
De nye flytypene.
Flytypen DC-6B hadde god kapasitet og rekkevidde. Da muligheten for å mellomlande på de amerikanske flybasene på Grønland åpnet seg; først Thule i testperioden og siden Søndre Strømfjord for den regulære passasjertrafikken, var SAS erobring av polområdene plutselig innen rekkevidde. Da DC-7C kunne tas i bruk i 1957 ble ruta til Tokyo åpnet.
Selskapet bygde i tillegg ut en rekke radiostasjoner på Grønland, både for å øke sikkerheten og til bruk i navigasjonen.
De første testturene og charterturene ble gjennomført uten flyvertinner eller kvinnelige passasjerer. Listen med sikkerhetsutstyr var lang og omfattende i tilfelle uthellet skulle være ute og flyet måtte nødlande.
