11. oktober 1960 introduserte SAS sitt nye firemotors jetdrevne passasjerfly av typen DC-8C/33. Den første turen gikk fra København til Tokyo med mellomlandinger i Bodø og Anchorage og ble unnagjort på 16 timer mot normalt 30 timers effektiv flytid. Flyet tok 130 passasjerer og hadde en besetning på 12- 13.
Begivenheten ble behørig markert i Bodø. Guttemusikken tok imot «Rurik Viking», dens besetning og passasjerer med en feiende marsj sammen med skolebarn og andre skuelystne. En rekke representanter fra byens administrasjon og politiske ledelse var også på plass. Olav Johannes Blind med familie var invitert og ble et svært populært fotomotiv blant passasjerene.
Bodø flyplass skulle på denne ruta fungere som en mellomlandingsstasjon eller et operativt støttepunkt når værforholdene gjorde nødvendig å etterfylle drivstoff. Flyplassen hadde året før fått nytt og moderne ekspedisjonsbygg og rullebanen hadde blitt betydelig oppgradert og forlenget og var derfor en av få flyplasser i landet som kunne ta imot fly av denne størrelsen. SAS planla å mellomlande i Bodø på de første åtte turene til Tokyo.
