«TUFSINGSØLER og gjedde på TV
Når vårsola varmer opp det kalde vårvatnet på grunnene i Tufsingå-deltaet, på vestsiden av Femund, finner gjedda vegen dit for å gyte. Og da er det ikke lenge før storfiskerne Joseph Bakken og John E. Bakken fra Tufsingdalen pakker nisteskreppene og gir sig gjeddeeventyret ved Tjønnan i vold. Gjeddefisket i deltaet er over 200 år gammelt, og Joseph Bakken har vært med i 48 vårer.
Je lyt i vegen, innrømmer Joseph Bakken, han står med Østerdalens mest fillete og herligste fiskehatt og tørker svetten i vårsolsteken utafor fiskebua på den vesle øya Grønland i Femundsjøen. I horisonten bak seg, mot øst, har han Svukkuen og Elgåhogna, mot vest dropler Sålekinna og Gråhøgda seg i mørke striper mellom snørestene. Nydratt gjedde glinser på våt snø, fiskegarn duver til tørk mellom bjørkestammer og kaffelukta siver sterk og besettende ut fra den gamle bua.
Joseph tar opp tråden igjen: Jeg er så inngrodd med gjeddefisket ved Femund, at jeg blir klein når tida nærmer seg. For meg er det helse – og like nytt og spennende hver vår. John E. Bakken har for det meste vært fiskekameraten min, vi har holdt til i fiskebua på Hopholmen eller i bua på Grønland. Vi bruker omkring 40 garn. Fisket er kortvarig, på en ukes tid er alt over. Men da har vi også, på det beste, tatt opp 300 kilo i garna. Det er ofte pene rugger, sier Joseph og har vanskelig for å finne ro over armen når han skal vise mål. Det blir nokså drygt mellom hendene, men da han skotter bort på fiskekameraten John og erfarer at han nikker under fiskerhatten, gir han seg og runder av slik: Ja, så var enkelte!
Gjeddefisket ved Femund er ikke slutt etter første vårforsøket. Senere kommer både solgjedda og lauvgjedda – den siste innfinner seg ved St. Hans, når løvet er nyutsprunget. Da er det nye voner. Men tufsingdølene har ikke brydd seg særlig mye om hverken solgjedda eller lauvgjedda de senere åra.
Hvordan nyttiggjør tufsingdølene seg gjedda?
I dag blir gjedda for det meste malt opp og laget fiskemat av, forteller Joseph Bakken. Men han er en kar som tar vare på tradisjonene, og heime på stabburet i Siksjølia, der han bor, er det ingen mangel på tørket gjedde under takbjelkene. Vi har tørrgjedde på stabburet hele året, tørrgjedde og rømmegraut er rene helgedagsmaten. Ute i marka bruker vi også tørrgjedde som spekemat, skjærer opp tynne fliser – det er velsmakende og godt. Men du må akte deg, så du ikke stikker deg på tennene til tørrgjedda, da kan du lett få blodforgiftning og verkefinger. Ofte legger vi også tørrgjedda i vatn natta over og koker den neste dag i et par timer. Hver sin smak, sier Joseph, som ikke legger skjul på at tørrgjedda står høyest i kurs hos ham.
Joseph Bakken har ført nøye dagbok over fisket sitt i Femund, og han mener ikke han tar for sterkt i når han forteller, at han for lengst har tatt over 100 000 Femund-fisk i sin tid. Men likest har gjeddefisket alltid vært, og ved Tjønnan har han gitt seg i kast med storkultene:
En dag hadde jeg en fjorten kilos gjedde i båten og var i gang med å få ei enda større over ripa. Jeg hadde storgjedda nesten halvparten over båtripa, da glapp kjekskroken, og det bare skvalp og blasket i vatnet. Den dagen mistet jeg gjedda jeg aldri våger å tippe vekta på. Men det er tatt gjedde på både 20 og 22 kilo i Femund, og jeg trur bestemt, at gjedda som slapp hørte heime i denne vektklassen.
I fiskebua ved Hopholmen skal en ikke ha pratet lenge over kaffekoppen før en skjønner Joseph Bakkens sterke interesse for litteratur og tradisjonsstoff – i stua på den ensomme fjellgarden sin østafor Siksjøen har han over to tusen bind i hyllene. Sin egen slekts- og gardshistorie er det en sjølsagt ting at han kjenner til bunns, men i disse dager er det Erich von Dänikens framtidsperspektiver den våkne fjellbonden er mest opptatt av!
Men i den gamle fiskebua ved Femund er det helst historier fra jakt- og fiske en får høre, og Joseph er også en uuttømmelig kilde slik. Så det får bli med bare en liten smakebit:
Handelsbestyreren ringte meg en vår og lurte på om jeg kunne skaffe en selskapsmiddag – det var orrhanen han tenkte på. Jeg hadde bare fem patroner, men jeg lovte å gjøre et forsøk. Jo da, det gikk ikke lange stunda før den første var tatt. Jeg tok orrhanen i handa, ristet den og blås som en villstyring. De andre orrhanene på leken ble som forhekset alle sammen. Du kan tru meg vil du, men jeg ristet, blås og skjøt til jeg hadde brukt opp de fem patronene. Da gikk jeg heim – med fem orrhaner i handa!
I yngre år jobbet Joseph Bakken på smeltehytta ved Røros. En dag kom arbeidskameraten Karlsen og spurte unggutten om han kunne tenke seg å ta natteskiftet for ham. Karlsen måtte heim fordi kona hans ventet en liten når som helst. Dagen etter kom Karlsen tilbake til smeltehytta og var en nybakt, stolt pappa – ei velskapt jente var kommet til verda. Karlsen takket pent arbeidskameraten Joseph for at han tok natteskiftet for ham. Joseph Bakken har aldri angret på det, for jenta som kom til om natta ble nemlig kona hans?
Det står noe i skriften om, at den som hjelper andre hjelper også seg sjøl. Det er sanne ord, bekrefter Joseph, tilfreds med både skriften og skjebnen.»

Joseph Bakken var kledd i vadmelsbukser og islender (strikkegenser med spettemøsnster). Han hadde ei strikket duskleue - topplue - på hodet og langskaftete gummistøvler på beina. Her skulle det settes garn for å fange gjedde, som i dette området, bortiimot 700 meter over havet, gyter like etter at isen har gått, ei ukes tid i mai måned. Det er nettopp i denne perioden at det er enklest å fange såkalt «isgjedde», når den søker inn mot de grunne sivbevokste strendene for å gyte, Det var et slikt gyteområde Joseph Bakken rodde i da dette fotografiet ble tatt.
