I Fortidsminneforeningens medlemsblad «Fortidsvern» nr. 3 2023 publiserte Berit Leikhammer en artikkel med tittelen «Kulturminne på mektig elv». Den andre halvdelen av denne teksten sammenfatter mye av det som hittil er skrevet om lenseanlegget ved Bingen, av Leikhammer selv og andre:
«BINGEN LENSER – TØMMERSTOKKER I MILLIONER
Fløtinga ved Bingen lenser har helt fra tidlige tider vært et sentralt punkt i Glommavassdragets historie. Tømmer fra distriktene ovenfor i hovedløpene Lågen og Glomma med sine mange sideelver, ble stanset og sortert ved Sørumsand og fordelt til bestemmelsesstedene nedenfor.
Nedenfor det trange elveløpet i Bingsfossen vider Glomma seg ut ved Sørumsand i en bredde på ca. 500 m. Samlet ved Bingen kunne tømmeret hope seg opp og pakke seg sammen i lag på flere meter. I år med mye tømmer ble elva fylt opp fra bredd til bredd i et par kilometers lengde. 1917 og 1918 var slike år, likeså de store tømmerårene på 1950-tallet. De som vokste opp med en «ælvekar» som far, lærte tidlig å gå tørskodd over elva på tømmeret.
Millioner av tømmerstokker ble hvert år holdt tilbake i et tømmerdepot, tømmerlanningen, for å unngå at alt strømmet ut i Øyeren og fikk spre seg ukontrollert utover store områder. Tømmeret ble slått ut fra utislepp oppover langs elvebreddene, eller lagt på isen i påvente av vårsmeltinga. Deretter gikk det sams med elvestrømmen nedetter. Det kalles løsfløting.
På hogstplassene [egentlig ved velteplassene langs vassdraget] ble det hogd inn kjøpers merke, så hver stokk gikk i elva med sin «adresse»; Borregaard, Westye Egeberg, Lillestrøm Dampsag & Høvleri, Tofte Cellulose, Greaker Cellulosefabrikk m. fl. [Det nærmestfølgende referer til tida før dampdrevne slepebåter kom (1849) og før sorteringa ble flyttet til Fetsund (1861):] Bingenfløterne sjekket hver eneste stokk og fordelte tømmeret inn i mottakernes egne flagestøer. Når ei flagestø var fylt opp, ble stokkene buntet sammen i såkalte flak og rodd eller seilt nedover elva til sagbruk rundt Øyeren, eller bort til Stalsbergstranda og Sagene i Lillestrøm og til Sagelva på Strømmen. Da gjaldt det nok å ha viljavær, dvs. nordavind som forsterket farten nedover elva.
ETABLERINGEN AV FETSUND LENSER I 1861
Da Kongsvingerbanen ble åpnet i 1862, ble jernbanebrua over Glomma lagt til sundet i Fet. Den mangehundreårige sorteringa av tømmer ved Bingen måtte dermed flyttes nedenfor brua. Denne var for lav og trang til at båter med buntet tømmer kunne passere under brua og mellom brukarene. Tømmeret ble fra da av løsfløtt fra Bingen til Fetsund. Bingen lenser fikk nå en rein attholdsfunksjon, dvs. å stoppe og samle tømmeret for så å slippe ned daglige porsjoner til Fetsund. Der nede ble Bingentømmeret sortert etter tømmermerker, buntet i sopper og samlet i vendinger før det ble slept videre over Øyeren. Selve sorteringsanlegget i Fetsund er bare drøye 160 år gammelt.
Bingen og Fetsund lenser tilhørte samme fløtingsdistrikt nr. 8 i Glommavassdraget helt til fløtinga ble lagt ned i 1985. Disse utgjorde til sammen et viktig knutepunkt og en betydelig arbeidsplass for både fastboende tømmerfløtere og tilreisende sesongarbeidere. Bingen og Fetsund lenser ble en samarbeidende enhet, nært knyttet til hverandre i den daglige driften, praktisk med en arbeidsstokk som fungerte på begge steder, utstyrsmessig med båt og redskap, med felles administrasjonssenter på Lund i Fetsund, og ikke minst sosialt med tilflyttinger og «giftermål oppover og nerover langs ælva», som en av gamlekara ved Bingen uttrykte det.
«DEN SPANSKE ARMADAEN» VED BINGEN
Etter at sorteringa av tømmer ble lagt til Fetsund, ble det anlagt et nytt og omfattende system av steinfylte lensekar ved Bingen. Karet er fylt opp med 150-200 kubikkmeter sprengstein. Rierkaret var konstruert med en solid rier og en plog oppstrøms som kunne stå imot tømmertrøkken og pløye tømmeret til side. Rieren besto av to parallelle, kraftige furustokker forsterket med doble jernbaneskinner og lå oppstrøms og diagonalt på plogen oppstrøms og på selve karkista. Når tømmeret kom tett med elvestrømmen, «rei» stokkene på rieren og presset karet ned i elvebunnen. Plogen pløyde tømmeret og fordelte trykket på karet. Det var en meget stødig kartype, som ble oppfunnet av bestyrer Johs. Johannesen og tatt i bruk på begynnelsen av 1900-tallet. Rierkarene erstattet de tidligere mye mindre firkantkarene, som ikke klarte presset godt og lett velta.
Attholdslensa ved Bingen, som strekker seg tvers over elva med doble lensestokker imellom, skulle stoppe alt løstømmeret som kom i vassdraget. Daglig ble det sluppet igjennom den mengden tømmer som lensearbeiderne i Fetsund rådde med å sortere i løpet av neste arbeidsdag. Stengerekka er fortsatt godt synlig og består av 10 solide rierkar, hver med en grunnflate på ca. 125 kvadratmeter og er pålet 2 m. ned i elvebunnen med kraftig tømmer. Attholdslensa, også kalt stengerekka og ti-karsrekka, ble satt opp rundt 1917.
Av de 51 gjenværende og synlige lensekar i dag teller vi 24 rierkar og 24 firkantkar, de siste mest som steinhauger i elva. Ved lavvann ses mange gamle kartomter, praktisk liggende ved siden av de synlige. Den økende tømmermengden krevde stadig større lagringsplass for tømmer, og hovedlensa har gjennom århundrene blitt flyttet lenger nedover i elva for å romme millioner av stokker. De siste 100 åra har den ligget i ro to km nedenfor Bingsfossen mellom Hammeren og Vestby. Kommer man i båt oppover Glomma fra Fetsund i en liten passbåt, siger de kolossale steinkarene ved Bingen visuelt imot deg som en hel skipsarmada.
HVEM VAR «ÆLVEKARA» VED BINGEN?
Tettstedet Sørumsand vokste fram mye på grunn av «fløyta på ælva». Bingen lenser var den selvfølgelige arbeidsplassen for stedets menn i generasjoner. Opprinnelig eide ikke fløterfamiliene hjemmene sine. Stedene langs elva ble kjøpt opp og eid av Christiania Tømmerdireksjon, seinere Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Det lå små lenseplasser og litt større selveide lensebruk på begge sider av Glomma. Vestby – området midt på kartet – var i en særstilling og ble kalt «røbby’n». I alle de rødmalte «direksjonshusa» bodde det fløterfamilier. Da fløtinga ble nedlagt, fikk folk anledning til å kjøpe stedene de bodde på. Det var det ikke alle som ville.
Fløterplassene var enkle stuer med et lite uthus som de større gårdene hadde satt opp langs elva, og som Tømmerdireksjonen kjøpte opp. I stedet for pliktarbeid på eiergårdene «arbe’ dom på ælva». Hans Hammeren uttalte: «Det var mange sånne husmannsplasser, kan en vel kælle det, som dereksjon’ åtte, for da hadde dom følka au. Det var itte bare bare!» Ingen turte streike, da kunne en miste husværet sitt. Hvis mannen døde, måtte enka og ungene flytte til en trang 2. etg., der det kanskje bodde en tregenerasjons fløterfamilie fra før. Ingen protesterte heller når de etter hver sommersesong fikk oppsigelse og måtte finne seg annet arbeid igjennom vinteren, ofte tømmerhogst. Det gjaldt særlig de litt yngre fløterne. Nesten alle ble tilsatt igjen neste vår, men som fløteren Hans uttrykte det i et intervju: «Det var jo dereksjon’ [som] tjente penger på det!»
Glomma har vært transportåre for tømmer, som sørget for arbeid og inntekt til fløterne og lensearbeidere, skogsarbeidere, sagbrukseiere og plankekjørere. På 1950- og 60-tallet var det populært for skoleungdom å jobbe på elva. «Nå kommer snart ungbokka», sa gamlekara.
Elva har en historie å fortelle, en historie om hvordan landskap og natur forandres over lang tid. Den forteller om hvor viktig vann og tømmer alltid har vært i Norge. Men Glomma forteller også menneskenes historie; ælvekara sin historie, fløterkvinnenes og unga sin historie. Folk har levd med elva farefullt innpå seg i generasjon etter generasjon. Fløternes erfaringer har blitt overført fra foreldre til barn. Ja, også fra en bestefar, selv tidligere «fløyter», som hadde tid til å gå langs elva og fortelle til en som ble leid i hånda.»

Fra gammelt av lå sorteringslensa der tømmer som skulle til sagbrukene på Nedre Romerike ble skilt fra det som skulle videre mot brukene i Nedre Glomma. Fra 1861, da den nye sorteringslensa nedenfor jernbanebrua ved Fetsund ble satt i drift, ble anlegget ved Bingen ombygd til et reservoar, der tømmeret ble samlet for deretter å bli sluppet i høvelige dagsrasjoner videre nedover til sorteringsanlegget 6-7 kilometer lengre nede ved elveløpet. Utover sommeren og høsten kunne tømmerbeholdningen i attholdslensa ved Bingen være på flere millioner stokker. I dette området, nedenfor Bingsfossen, der elva var stilleflytende, fantes det 51 lensekar. Det dreide seg om steinfylte tømmerkister, som var fornkringspunkter for lensa som holdt igjen tømmeret som etter hvert skulle slippes ned mot sorterings- og moseanlegget ved Fetsund lenser. Ved inngangen til året 1984 startet Norsk Skogbruksmuseum arbeidet med det som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Da var det klart at den tradisjonsrike tømmerfløtinga i vassdraget ville bli avviklet i 1985. Museet ønsket derfor å få i gang et dokumentasjonsprosjekt der tømmertransporten på vassdraget skulle ha hovedfokus. Historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som hadde arbeidet ved museet fra 1982, skulle ha hovedansvar for prosjektet. Han tok sikte på å samle et representativt utvalg av løse gjenstander fra fløtinga til museet, han ville dokumentere faste fløtingsinnretninger i vassdraget, ta vare på eldre fotografier og arkivalia, samt samle det han kalte «minne- og tradisjonsmateriale» med tilknytning til Glomma-fløtinga. Særlig museets fotograf, OT Ljøstad, var en trofast samarbeidspartner under arbeidet med prosjektet. Vestheim og Ljøstad reiste mye langs vassdraget i 1984 og 1985, men også i oppryddingsfasen i de par første sesongene etter dette. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot sitt fotoarkiv, som besto av 72 album en del negativmateriale fra ulike deler av vassdraget, til Norsk Skogmuseum. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i den murte delen av kontorkomplekset Fellesfløtingsforeningen hadde hatt på Fetsund. Der veiledet Øivind Vestheim en del lokale medarbeidere som ble engasjert for å ordne arkivet. Forvaltningen av arkivmaterialet ble etter 1990 overlatt til lensemuseet, som ble etablert på Fetsund dette året. Mange av gjenstandene Vestheim samlet inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med prosjektet ble dessverre kjørt direkte på fjernmagasin i Elverum, uten at de ble registrert. Dermed gikk beklageligvis viktig informasjon om proveniens og bruk tapt. Heller ikke de fotografiske opptakene ble tilfredsstillende registrert da de var «ferske». Øivind Vestheim brukte en kassettopptaker som «feltdagbok» under mange av turene langs vassdraget. Bjørn Bækkelund skrev av mange av kassettene etter at han begynte ved museet høsten 1997. Innslagene av tradisjons- og minnemateriale på disse opptakene var få. Prosjekt Glomma skulle opprinnelig vare fra og med 1984 til og med 1988, altså i fem år. Det viste seg imidlertid at oppgavene ble mange, og at arbeidet tok lengre tid enn forutsatt. Øivind Vestheim avsluttet sin del av prosjektet med utgivelsen av boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer» i 1998. Han sluttet for øvrig ved museet like før boka var ferdig. I ettertid har nye medarbeidere ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gradvis forsøkt å krympe med det forvaltningsmessige etterslepet etter Prosjekt Glomma.
