ÅSTA: Det nordligste utislag av tømmer i historiens siste Glåma-fløting startet i går ved Glomstadmora sør for Åsta. Seks mann med fire hjullastere innledet selve utislaget, to mann med fløterhaker og båt hjalp stokkene vel avgårde på deres lange veg til havet. 10 000 fastkubikkmeter tømmer lå fra morgenen av på velteplassen ved Glomstadmora. Lørdag er trolig de siste stokkene flytende. Hver hjullaster kjører ut 500 kbm pr. dag. Det blir 2 000 kbm. pr. dag til sammen altså 10 000 kbm på 5 dager.
Det er effektivt, men ikke utpreget romantisk, når fire maskiner med veldige stålkjever tømmer om gangen avgårde så støvskyene står. Mer romantisk ved elvebredden, der Einar A. Amundsen for førtiende året på rad står klar med båt og hake for å geleide stokkene avgårde på den fire kilometer lange turen ned til Bråten, der andre mannskaper overtar. Det er kronglet farvann å fløte i det første stykket, mengder av øyer og ører og sideløp i elva, men utbedret etter hvert slik at en nå stort sett har to løp å passe. Einar A. Amundsen var bare guttungen første gang han var med far sin her på fløting, og siden han fylte 16 år har han fløtt selv hele tiden. 56 år gammel har han igjen noen år da han kunne gjort samme jobben, men innser at det er definitivt slutt nå. Han legger ikke skjul på at det er litt vemodig. Vemodig er det også for hans medhjelper, Ragnvald Pedersen fra Rena, men har har fløtt bare ti år, ikke et helt liv.

Maskinelt utislag av tømmer med griplaster fra terminalplassen ved Glomstadmora i Åmot, Hedmark. Slike terminalplasser var et produkt av det målbevisste tekniske rasjonaliseringsarbeidet i skogbruket etter 2. verdenskrig. En av forutsetningene for slike plasser var at en stadig større del av avvirkningen ble hentet med lastebiler på de mange nye skogsbilvegene, slik at tømmeret kunne samles på noen få utislagssteder.
I 1985, som ble det siste året med tømmerfløting i Glomma, var Glomstadmora det øverste utislagsstedet, Her lå det lagret 10 000 fastkubikkmeter tømmer som skulle slås på vassdraget ved hjelp av fire griplastere. Hver maskin skulle kunne ekspedere om lag 500 kubikkmeter om dagen. Følgelig regnet man med å kunne tømme plassen i løpet av fem dager. Deretter ble maskinene flyttet nedover vassdraget, der det lå mer tømmer som skulle slås på vannet og fløtes i retning Borregaard-fabrikken i Sarpsborg.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glomma. Derfor fikk historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som ble ansatt som amanuensis ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1984, dokumentasjon av denne virksomheten som en av sine primæroppgaver. Vestheim gjorde mange reiser langs vassdraget, der han snakket med fløtere og dokumenterte ved hjelp av notatblokk og diktafon. Han hadde også med seg museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad på flere av turene. Vestheims dokumentasjonsarbeid dreide seg også om de materielle levningene etter fløtingsvirksomheten som snart skulle opphøre. Han ble blant annet sentral i første fase av bevaringa av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiver ved Fetsund lenser. Arkivet ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det ligge på Fetsund, hvor Vestheim sammen med lokale engasjementsmedarbeidere foretok en første ordning. Den daglige forvaltningen av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv er seinere overlatt til fløtermuseet ved Fetsund lenser. I 1985 omtalte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum Vestheims arbeid som «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette siste driftsåret til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening dokumenterte Vestheim og Ljøstad fløting i Åmot i Østerdalen, ved Norsfossen i Solør, ved Bingen og på Øyeren i Akershus, og ved Sleppetangen, Solbergfoss, Vamma, Glennetangen og Eidet i Østfold. For å få gode oversiktsbilder av lensesystemer og tømmersleping leide museet fly. Sluttproduktet fra Vestheims arbeid med Glomma-fløtinga ble boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», som ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
