Bøketrærne har en hard ved som er meget robust så fremt den ikke utsettes for periodisk befuktning. I 1671 utnevnte kong Kristian 5. halvbroren sin, stattholder Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve, til greve med det gamle Brunla len i søndre Vestfold som grevskap. I Danmark rådde grevene stort sett over landsbyer med omliggende jordbruksarealer. I Larvik grevskap var det i hovedsak jernverks- og sagbruksdrift som skulle skaffe greven inntekter. Gyldenløve var spesielt opptatt av edelløvtrærnes verdi. Han utstedte tidlig forbud mot uautorisert hogst av eik og bøk i grevskapet, og for eikas del fikk han dette forbudet stadfestet av kongen i 1691. Bøkehogstforbudet ble først bekreftet av kongen i 1724, da Gyldenløves sønn, Ferdinand Anton Danneskiold Laurvig, var blitt greve. Hogst av disse treslagene – uansett trærnes vekstfaser og kvaliteter – ble straffet med bøter på 100 riksdaler per tre. Dersom noen ble tatt for slike handlinger for andre gang, ble bøtene fordoblet, og tredje gang kunne straffen bli et opphold i det beryktete fengselet Bremerholm i København. Bøtenivået var skyhøyt. Likevel var det mange som ble tatt for slik hogst. Ellers i Norge fantes det ikke noe hogstforbud for disse treslagene, men det var forbudt å eksportere eikematerialer, som var attraktive blant annet ved skipsbygging. At det ikke fantes generelle nasjonale restriksjoner på bøkehogst skyldtes antakelig at forekomstene av dette treslaget var få og lokale.

Dette fotografiet ble tatt i denne bøkeskogen en vårdag i 2021. Treslaget bøk (Fagus silvatica) ble antakelig brakt til Norge av mennesker. Forekomsten i søndre Vestfold, som også har spredt seg videre sørover langs kysten og inn i Telemark, antas å være om lag 1 500 år gammel. Det finnes også en forekomst ved Seim nord for Bergen. Biologene mener at den er om lag 1 000 år gammel. I Vestfold finnes de viktigske bøkebestandene i morenejord på det såkalte Raet. Treslaget er ømfintlig for frost og trives best i miljøer med forholdsvis høy luftfuktighet, altså i kystnære strøk, men kan i Vestfold klare seg på lokaliteter opptil 350 meter over havet. Bøketrærne er skyggetålende, men også skyggeskapende. Bladene orienterer seg mot lysåpninger og fanger mye sollys, noe som forårsaker at det blir skyggefullt og svalt under trekronene. Derfor er det dårlige vekstforhold for de fleste andre plantearter i bøkeskogen. Dette fotografiet er tatt en vårdag, før bladverket var fullt utvokst. På marka lå det mye strø (nedfall) fra trærne. På kalkfattig grunn vil nedbrytinga av slikt strø gå forholdsvis langsomt, også fordi at temperaturen i det skyggefulle miljøet gjennomgående er sval. Her er det små bøketrær og hvitveis som har trengt gjennom strøsjiktet. Når strøet råtner, anses det for å ha en jordforbedrende effekt.
