I 1628 ble den norske hæren basert på soldatlegder. En legd besto av en stor eller flere mindre garder. Hver legd skulle stille en fullt utrustet soldat. Plikten til å stille soldater var en byrde som hvilte på jordeiendommene. Utdannelsen skjedde til å begynne med ved at soldatene ekserserte på kirkebakken etter gudstjenesten. Ved eksersis på kirkebakken ble det lagt liten vekt på opplæring i våpenbruk, men mer foteksersis, å stå og gå ordentlig, og militær fremtreden. Ytterligere utdannelse for fotfolk og dragoner foregikk på kompanienes ekserserplasser, slik som øvelser i skyting, saling, ridning og øvelser i store formasjoner. I 1721 er ekserserplassene på Hadeland: Granske kompani på Dæhlenmoen, Hadelandske kompani på Jorstadmoen (Tuvsmoen) og Jevnagerske kompani på Moesmoen i Jevnaker. Tilknytningen mellom kirke og militærvesen ble mindre tett i løpet av 1700-tallet. I 1774 ble kirkeeksersisen avskaffet og erstattet med 12 dagers årlige øvelser.
I 1957 betaler Hadeland Bygdebokkomite v/Randi Bjørkvik Riksarkivet 100 kroner for å få en "redegjørelse om telthuset ved Gran kirke m.v.". Arbeidet utføres av major Lars Kiærland, og her følger noe av det han finner i sitt arkivsøk: Kirketårn og kirkeloft var de første vanlige lagringsplasser for militært utstyr, altså en type militærmagasiner. I Opplandske infanteriregiments rapport av 18. desember 1705 er Gran hovedkirke nevnt som egnet til telthus for Hadelandske infanterikomapni. Det er derfor sannsynlig at kirkens loft en tid ble utnyttet som militærmagasin. I henhold til Kongelig resolution av 16. desember 1726 ble det bygget egne telthus for infanterikompaniene fra 1720-årene og oppover. Det var vanlig at kompaniene hadde egne telthus på ekserserplassen eller ved kirken.
Dette bekreftes i "Kallsbok for Gran". I "Kallsbok for Gran" skriver C. N. Böyesen i 1732 på side 10: "Ellers staaer i den Syndre og Østre Kant af Hovedkirche-Gaarden et Straahuus, som for faae Aar siden er antaget til Tælthuuss..."
I "Kallsbok for Gran" skriver A. C. Krog ca 1795 om Telthuset og viser til sitatet over (fra 1732): "I det Sydøstre Hjørne af Kirkegaarden staaer en taarnagtig Beenbygning, omtrent 7 skriidt i Fiirkant, med en Dør mod Vest og et Vindue og en Port mod Nord, den sidste med Steentop og muret af same slags steen som Kriken, og paa indre side med Huller for slagbomen. Denne Bygning bruges nu til at gjeme Redskaber i, men var ifølge Grans Kaldsbog (se forne Pag. 10) faae Aar før 1732 ”antaget til Telthuus og sagdes i Fordum Tider at have været et asylum eller Tilflugtsted, hvorhen Folk, som var komen i nogen Uleilighed, flyede, og nøde derpaa en vis Tid nødtørfteg Ophold og saa længe fri fra at Tiltale.” Ikke usandsynlig var denne Bygning fra først af Kirkens Klokkestoyel."
Major Lars Kiærland skriver videre i sitt brev til Randi Bjørkvik: "Hvor lenge kirken (ev.) har vært nyttet som militærmagasin er ikke helt brakt på det rene. I hvert fall kan det knapt ha vært lenger enn til 1753, da det allerede ved et skriv fra Landetatens Generalkommissariat av 24/6 1752 til feltmarskalk Arnold står anført at: "... Til 3de nye Telthuuse ved det 2det Opl. Regiment ... Captain Hals'es, Gran-Jevnagerske kompani." Dette kompani skulle altså få et nytt telthus oppsatt da, men formodentlig har det hatt et oppsatt allerede i slutten av 1720-årene. Samtidig, altså i 1753, fikk Hadelandske dragonkompani av 3. Sønnenfjeldske dragonregiment sitt (første) telthus oppsatt ved Gran hovedkirke." Arbeidene med å bygge telthuset på Granavollen begynte i 1753, for da å bli militært lager for det Hadelandske Dragonkompani av 3. Sønnenfjeldske dragonreiment. Arbeidene trakk ut og det gikk flere år før telthuset stod helt ferdig. Kiærland skriver at det er bevart omfattende korrespondanse om grunnen til det. Han har kun sett overfladisk på dette, men ser at skylden for forsinkelsen legges på fogden Peter Dorph. I desember 1759 omtales telthuset som nyoppført og at omkostningene for oppførelsen ble 117 riksdaler. Men ontrent samtidig reises det krav om å få dekkes reparasjonsutgifter på det nyoppførte telthuset. Aksel Helmen har forklart dette med at bygningen nesten blåste ned rett etter at den var oppsatt.
Telthuset ved Gran kirke ble i 1834 overført fra Kavaleri- til Artelleribrigaden i henhold til Kongelig res. av 6/2 1834.
Da Syver Gaarder (1803-1867) kjøpte Granavolden Gjæstgiveri i 1844, har han formodentlig bedt veiinspektør i Kristians Amt, Carl Christian Buchholz (1787-1849), som var en dreven karttegner, om å lage en oversikt over Granavollen. Denne karttegning fra 1844, tegnet av Buchholz, viser at Telthuset er plassert rett nord for kirkegårdens mur. Den samme plassering av Telthuset ser en på en tegning av Granavollen fra ca 1820.
Telthuset ble flyttet i 1878, i forbindelse med utvidelse av kirkegården. I Armedepartementets skriv av 31/5 1877 står det: "... deparetmenet samtykker i, at Grans Herredstyrelse lader det ved Gran Kirke staaende Telthus flytte rett over paa den anden side af den bergenske Hovedvei og gjenoppføre paa den paa det hoslagte tilbagefølgende Rids antydede Tomt, ..." I forbindelse med flyttingen ble da gjort en del reparasjoner på bygningen. Selve tomta, som senere kalles "Handelslagstomta", ble ikke solgt til Armedepartementet. De eide kun huset.
Telthuset ble brukt av feltartilleriet til ca 1890-1892, skriver Aksel Helmen i et brev til major Lars Kiærland datert 27. februar 1958. Videre skriver han: "Som bekjendt blev tjenestehestene på Hadeland brukt ved feltarteleriet som ekserserte på gardermoen. Det samme var tilfelle med mannskapene. Uniformer og utrustning blev kjørt fra Oslo til telthuset på granvollen hvor mannskapene møtte og "tok i mot" hester, bekledning og efekter forøvrig. De rei så over åsen til gardermoen og møtte der til øvelser. Etter tjenesten rei de tilbake til granvollen og lverte sakene der; som da senere blev kjørt til magasinene på festningen. Det altså kunn ut og innlevering som foregikk ved telthuset i dets senere år. Muligens har det foregått på denne måte helt siden artileristene fra Hadeland fik sin øvelsesplass på Gardermoen."
Huset ble solgt fra Ingeniørvåbenet til Gran kommune i 1909 for kroner 380,-. Kommunen brukte fra 1914 huset som kornlager. I 1923 ble Telthuset solgt til Hadeland Folkemuseum for kroner 400,-, under forutsetning av at huset ble stående i Gran (underforstått at det ikke ble flyttet til museet i Brandbu). Gran kommune v/ordfører Grini frafalt i januar 1924 kravet om betaling. I 1928 fikk Gran kommune låne Telthuset til "opbevaring av pantegods". Det var meningen at Telthuset skulle bli stående på Granavollen, men i 1958 måtte det vike for et forretningsbygg (siden museet ikke eide tomta huset stod på), og derfor ble det flyttet til Hadeland Folkemuseum. Dette skjedde ikke uten innsigelser. Bl.a. uttalte Statens Museumsdirektør, Eivind S. Engelstad, at huset tilhørte miljøet på Granavollen. Forrtidsminneforeningen skrev i sin rapport fra foreningens antikvariske arbeid i 1957 at flyttingen medførte ”en forringelse av det kulturmiljø det hører til”.
På Hadeland Folkemuseum var planen å bruke telthuset som magasin, men tømmeret lå lagret og bygget ble ikke gjenreist på museet før i 1975. Da hadde museet ansatt egen håndverker, Oddbjørn Myrdahl, og dette var blant de første arbeidsoppgavene han tok fatt på.
Tømmeret hadde ikke hatt gode lagringsforhold i de 17 årene som det lå lagret. Det var derfor nødvendig å spleise inn nytt virke i en del av stokkene da huset ble satt opp igjen. Det ble brukt materialer fra Tingelstadlåven (Låven som stod der museet i dag har parkeringsplass) i taket og i golvet i andre etasje. Tømmeret ble visstnok heller ikke merket da det ble tatt ned (Fortidsminneforeningens årbok 1963), slik at det var vanskelig å få satt det opp igjen på en god måte.
Telthuset var panelt da det sto på Granavollen i krysset ved veien ned til prestegarden og Steinhuset. Panelet ble vurdert som for dårlig til å brukes videre, og bygningen ble derfor satt opp igjen på museet uten utvendig panel.
Allerede i 1962 var det planer og forhandlinger om å gjenreise telthuset på Granavollen, på ei tomt umiddelbart nord for kirkegarden. Det ser ut til at problemer med å få tilgang til tomta (den lå på klokkergardens grunn) var årsaken til at dette ikke ble gjennomført.
I 1975 tok fylkesarkitekt Magne Veierød opp igjen saken i et brev til Gran kommune, da med plassering sør for butikkbygningen. Det ble lagt fram som hastesak, på grunn av planene om gjenreising på museet. og bygningsrådet var positive til initiativet. Saken ble også tatt opp av Samnemnda for museene i Oppland. I 1988 skrev museumsbestyrer ved Hadeland Folkemuseum Åse A. Lange i et brev til kommunen at museet gjerne ser at telthuset blir flyttet tilbake til Granavollen.
Neste gang saken ble tatt opp, var i forbindelse med utarbeidelse av reguleringsplan for Granavollen i 1992. I brev av 13.05.92 til Hadeland Folkemuseum skriver ordfører Lars Arne Høydahl: ”Og når en har fått en godkjent reguleringsplan med avmerket plass for telthuset, ja, da har en tatt det første skritt i retning av å føre telthuset tilbake fra museets område til Granavollen.”
I 2018 ble Telthuset tilbakeført til "Handelslagstomta". Huset har igjen fått utvendig panel.
