Johan Calvins Forelesninger om de tolv såkalt mindre profeter. Tilegnet kongen av Sverige. Geneve 1581. Boken utkom første gang i 1551. Den er forsåvidt ikke skrevet av Calvin selv, men av hans sekretær etter forelesningsnotater, noe som var vanlg i reformasjonstiden. De tolv er Det gamle testamentets profeter med unntagelse av Esaias, Jeremias og Esekiel.
Calvin (1509-64) var født i Frankrike og studerte ved flere franske universitet. I 1534 måtte han fly landet pga. protestantiske sympatier. Fra 1536 hadde han Sveits som base for sin reformatorgjerning rundt på Kontinentet. Samme år utkom hans hovedverk Institutio religionis Christianae.
Ankeret er brukt som kristent symbol helt siden oldtiden, Det uttrykker håpet om frelse i Kristus på livets seilas. Slangen uttrykker i denne forbindelse håpet om helbredelse og et nytt liv på samme måte som den gjør det på Æskulaps stav i lege- og apoteksymbolikken. "Kristus gir det hellige anker for dem som er kastet på sjøen, og er til alle tider den eneste frelse/redning".
