Stereoskopisk fotografi er basert på det prinsipp at om to fotografier av et motiv er tatt fra to punkter som svarer til øyeavstanden, så vil de to bildene oppfattes som et tilnærmet tredimensjonalt bilde, om de betraktes på en slik måte at øynene ser hvert sitt bilde av motivet. Prinsippet ble først forklart av den engelske fysiker Sir Charles Wheatstone i 1832.
Charles Wheatstone (06.02.1802 - 19.10.1875) var i begynnelsen av sin karriere instrumentmaker av musikkinstrumenter. I 1830 - årene førte hans interesse for lyd til eksperimenter med elektrisk kommunikasjon. Han ble professor i "Experimental Philosophy" ved Kings College i London og ble opptatt som medlem av the Royal Society i 1836. I 1837 ble han kjent med William Fothergill Cooke som også arbeidet med utvikling av telegrafien. De ble partnere og utviklet et telegrafsystem. Den 24. juli 1837 ble systemet demonstrert ved at det ble formidlet en beskjed via en telegraflinje ved jernbanelinjen mellom Euston og Camden Town.
