Komplett daguerretypiutsutyr som er laget av den kjente franske optikeren Chevalier. Det ble kjøpt av Universitetet i Christiania i 1843 og brukt frem til ca. 1850.
Franskmannen Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787 - 1851) utviklet en prosess med forsølvete kopperplater som han utsatte for joddamp. Da fikk han et tynt lag sølvjodid på overflaten av sølvet og dette eksponerte han i kamera i 15 - 20 minutter. Etterpå kunne han fremkalle ved å utsette platen for kvikksølvdamp. Da dannet det seg kvikksølvamalgam der hvor lyset hadde virket. Daguerreotypiet ble offentlig kjent gjennom det franske vitenskapsakademi ved et stort møte den 19. august 1839. Daguerreotyopiprosessen ble den første allment brukte fotografiske prosessen, og holdt seg populær i nesten 20 år.
