Stereoskopisk fotografi er basert på det prinsipp at om to fotografier av et motiv er tatt fra to punkter som svarer til øyeavstanden, så vil de to bildene oppfattes som et tilnærmet tredimensjonalt bilde, om de betraktes på en slik måte at øynene ser hvert sitt bilde av motivet. Prinsippet ble først forklart av den engelske fysiker Sir Charles Wheatstone i 1832.
Stereoflektoskopet ble introduert i 1913 og var en forbedring av Voigländers tidligere stereofotoskop, etter mønster av Richards Verascope.
