Stereoskopisk fotografi er basert på det prinsipp at om to fotografier av et motiv er tatt fra to punkter som svarer til øyeavstanden, så vil de to bildene oppfattes som et tilnærmet tredimensjonalt bilde, om de betraktes på en slik måte at øynene ser hvert sitt bilde av motivet. Prinsippet ble først forklart av den engelske fysiker Sir Charles Wheatstone i 1832.
Verascope ble først lansert i 1894, og produsert av Jules Richard i Paris. Noe som bidro til popularitet var et "system" av tilbehør og framvisere som kunne kjøpes i tillegg.
