Arbeidstjenesten ble innført i 1940, basert på frivillig innsats. Hensikten var å gjenreise krigsrammede steder i landet. Mange meldte seg, både kvinner og menn. Tvungen arbeidstjeneste ble innført for 20-åringer fra 1941. Den ble lagt opp etter tysk mønster med spadeeksersis og lignende. Et av hovedmålene var å nazifisere norsk ungdom. Det var denne form man oppførdret ungdom til å sabotere (fra Cappelens Norgeshistorie bind 13).
Opplysninger om AT-leir fra informant:
"Da brukte vi spaden å eksersere med Den måtte være helt blankslitt når vi stilte opp om morgenen. Det var en slags militærtjeneste for de som var vernepliktige i krigsårene og ikke fikk vanlig militærtjeneste. Tyskera stod bak dette, men vi hadde norsk befal. Vi skulle lære vanlig eksersis. Vi dreiv i tømmerhøgst i Tingelstad almenning og samtidig dreiv vi litt med nysyrking/grøfting av myrer. Vi bodde i brakker 10 - noen og tjue og brakkerommet. Trur vi var 11 på rommet. Sjukestua var godt besøkt, men det var ikke så lett å bli sjukmeldt.
Vi ble utkalt, vi måtte. Det var strengt. Det var ikke hyggelige dager. Mange foreldre var redde for oss. Det var ikke tyskere der, norsk befal. Selve sjefen het Sopp og var fra Lena. Trur mesteparten av befalet var på tyskeras side. Maten var simple saker. Vi hadde matpakke og gikk og forsynte oss ved disken. Det var brakke med bastubad i. Etterpå var det ut i snøhaugen.
