- I 1997 kjøpte Østlandske Trevarefabrikkers Forening Solheims snekkerverksted i Kolbu på Toten av Magne Olav Solheim for 50 000 kroner. Verkstedet ble etablert av selgerens bestefar, Olaf Solheim (1862-1956) omkring første verdenskrig, og drevet av ham og sønnen Even Solheim (1904-1985) fram til 1974. Verkstedkjøpet skjedde i forståelse med Norsk Skogmuseum, og målet var å bruke det i formidling av trevarefabrikkenes tidlige historie ved museet i Elverum. Man vurderte både flytting av hele verkstedbygningen til Norsk Skogbruksmuseums friluftsmuseum og gjenskaping av verkstedrommet i museets prosjekterte basisutstilling, «Tid for Skog». Selgeren ønsket helst å beholde bygningsskallet som redskapsrom og veteranbilgarasje på sin eiendom. Museet bestemte seg for å rekonstruerte verkstedrommet i sine utstillingslokaler. For å få det så korrekt som mulig, reiste Bjørn Bækkelund til Kolbu for å måle opp huset og tegne inn plasseringa av maskiner og andre innredningselementer, samt beskrive materialbruk. Deretter skaffet man tilsvarende materialtyper, i hovedsak fra rivingshus, og bygde en kopi av verkstedrommet i museet. Man måtte gjøre visse tilpasninger til museumsbyggets bærekonstruksjoner, som har innbyrdes senteravstand på 10 meter i en retning og 5 meter i en annen. Dette innebar imidlertid ingen store avvik med henblikk på planløsningen Det faktum at den ene langveggen ble reist inntil en murvegg i museet ødela imidlertid mulighetene for to vinduer på denne veggflata. Takhøyden i museumsbygget gav heller ikke muligheter for det materialloftet verkstedlokalet i Kolbu hadde. Maskiner og annet løsøre ble hentet til Elverum med varebil. Materialet ble registrert og fotografert - i hovedsak i samarbeid mellom den unge historikeren Christer Nilsson, magasinbetjent Olav Bye og fotograf OT Ljøstad. Deretter ble det aller meste montert i det rekonstruerte verkstedrommet, stort sett på de plassene det hadde ligget da bygningen ble oppmålt. Det første byggetrinnet av utstillingsprosjektet «Tid for Skog», som interiøret fra Solheims snekkerverksted inngår i, ble åpnet av daværende kulturminister Ellen Horn 27. april 2000.
