Høsten 1982 skrev museumsdirektøren ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, Tore Fossum, følgende artikkel om slik «baller» i hedmarksavisenes museumsserie, «Jeg fant, jeg fant»:
«Furunålballer.
Naturen kan være forunderlig, mangesidig og gåtefull. I 1979 ble det levert inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum to kunstferdige formete kuler av furunåler, slik som bildet viser. Vi kjente ikke til dette fenomenet fra før, men etter hvert som tiden har gått, har det kommet inn opplysninger både fra personer og gjennom litteratur om at baller av plantemateriale, både dødt og levende, kan dannes i vann under spesielle forhold. En kunne lett tro at insekter eller andre dyr hadde noe med dannelsen å gjøre, men dette er ikke tilfelle.
Våre to baller, den ene 16 og den andre 12 centimeter i diameter, ble funnet i Rørsjøen, tre-fire kilometer nordøst for Sorken i Femundsmarka. Det var skogfullmektig Ole Flobak fra Sorken som fant dem og ga dem til museet. Flobak har sett slike furunålsballer i en bestemt, langgrunn vik i Rørsjøen flere ganger. En gang fikk han skåret over en ball, og midt inne i kjernen var det en reinlavdott. Det som har skjedd er at etter at reinlavdotten falt i det relativt grunne vannet, har den bølget frem og tilbake med strøm og vind like over bunnen. Fra furuskogen omkring faller det stadig barnåler i vannet, som etter hvert legger seg på bunnen. Furunålene har stukket seg inn i laven, og den første lille pinnsvinballen har rullet videre, frem og tilbake, og nye furunåler har festet seg og gjort ballen større og større.
Det er flere vilkår som må være tilstede for at slike barnålkuler skal dannes. Det må være plantemateriale som ballen kan bygges av, en grunn sjø eller en grunn vik uten siv eller andre planter, og en kjerne som ballen kan bygges opp omkring. Den kjernen må ha en bestemt vekt. Den kan ikke flyte, men må heller ikke være for tung. Det er sikkert også viktig at vannstand, vindstyrke og vindretning er riktige, for at den rette rullingen skal finne sted.
I en sjø i Närke i Sverige ved navn Botaren hadde det gjennom lengre tid dannet seg barnålkuler, men da sjøen ble oppdemt til industriformål og vannstanden ble høyere, ble det slutt på dannelsen av slike baller.
Knut Fægri har beskrevet tulliballer, som han kaller dem, som har kommet inn til Botanisk museum i Bergen. Han mener at baller av furunåler er sjeldne. Nåler av lerk er mykere og danner lettere baller enn de stive furunålene, og det er baller av lerkenåler som oftest blir omtalt i litteraturen. Fægri nevner at en østerriksk botaniker på et år har tellet over 3 000 baller dannet av plantemateriale i en sjø i Østerrike. Han mener likevel ikke at dannelsen av slike baller kan sies å være vanlig. Etter hvert som ballene blir for store, vil de falle fra hverandre, og det er kanskje derfor at de er så sjeldne å finne.
