I anledning av Deres andragende av 12te d.m. meddeles herved at jeg samtykker i at dampskibet «Johns» navn forandres til «Carl» paa betingelse av, at rederiet besørger navneforandringen bekjendtgjort i Norsk kundgjørelsestidende samt tinglyst ved rederiets verneting og ved jurisdiktionen for det toldsted hvorfra skibet i regelen skal fare (kfr. Skibsregisterreglementets § 72).

SubjectSkienvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforenings slepebåt «D/S Carl», fotografert ved Løveid, ytterst i Norsjø, antakelig da båten var nyinnkjøpt i 1911. Dette fartøyet kjøpte fløtingsforeningen fra Gøteborg, der det hadde gått under navnet «D/S John». Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforenings styre eller direksjon skal ha valgt Carl-navnet for å hedre brukseier Hans Carl Hansen (1844-1925), som var medlem av organisasjonens styre i perioden 1897-1917. D/S Carl ble bygd ved Eriksbergs mekaniska Verkstad I Gøteborg i 1894, men var noe ombygd i 1902 og hadde fått ny dampkjel i 1904, slik at det var et forholdsvis moderne og velfungerende fartøy Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening kjøpte for om lag 12 000 kroner i 1911. D/S Carl gikk som slepebåt i Skiensvassdraget fram til 1936. Her er fartøyet fotografert fra babord side med en mann på fordekket, en i styrhuset og en på akterdekket. Båten hadde en vimpel i baugen, antakelig med navnet «Carl», og et norsk flagg i akterenden. Skorsteinen var merket med initialene til Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening.
Dette er ett av flere som ble funnet i papirarkivet etter Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening. Etter at fløtingsaktiviteten i dette vassdraget ble avviklet i 2005 eksisterte organisasjonen juridisk sett som selskap til 2008, blant annet fordi det tok tid å få gjort opp boet og avviklet ansvarsforhold rundt anlegg i og ved vassdraget. Administrasjonen og styret som avviklet Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening var klar over den store økonomiske betydningen fløtinga hadde hatt for næringslivet i Telemark, og følte ansvar for at virksomhetens historie ble ivaretatt. Arkivmaterialet ble derfor sendt til Norsk Skogmuseum for ordning og digital registrering i ASTA-databasen, som publiseres for en bredere allmennhet på nettstedet «Arkivportalen». Skogmuseet fikk også i oppdrag å skrive ei bok om virksomheten. Blant dokumentene fra Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening lå det altså en del fotografier, hvorav mange var brukt i Diderik Cappelens og Emil Auberts bok «Skiensvassdragets fællesfløtningsforening gjennem 50 aar 1862-1912» (1913). En del av disse motivene - blant annet dette - ble i en tidlig fase skannet av Norsk Skogmuseums fotograf. Seinere er dette materialet, sammen med det «rene» fotoarkivet fra Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening, etter avtale sendt til Telemark Museum i Skien, for skanning og digital tilgjengeliggjøring derfra. Den originale papirkopien av dette fotografiet befinner seg derfor der, og en annen digital kopi finnes muligens i Telemark Museums database på nettstedet «DigitaltMuseum». Begge museene fikk penger fra Fellesfløtningsforeningen for å ta hånd om det historiske kildematerialet virksomheten har etterlatt seg.
