- Den første studenterferden til Nord-Norge gikk med "Nordland". Ideen ble unnfanget av bergenseren Bing, mens professor Yngvar Nielsen sto fadder. Det Norske Studentersamfunds formann Gustav Heiberg, Karl Johanssen og Jens Frederiksen fra Melbu fungerte som arrangementskomite, med velvillig assistanse fra Richard With, og 150 akademikere i alle aldre var med. Avreisen fant sted fra Trondheim 17. juli 1902 og reisens mål var Kirkenes og Boris Gleb. På nordtur var skipet innom Bodø, Svolvær, Vesterålsstedene, Ingebrigtsens hvalfangststasjon på Rolvsøy, Nordkapp, Vardø og Vadsø, og på sørtur var det anløp av Hammerfest, Tromsø, Harstad og Narvik.
