Lærdalsøyri var frå 1648 skysstasjon på ruta over Filefjell. I 1845 starta Jørgen Christian Lindstrøm og kona Birgitte Mathea frå Bergen landhandel på Lærdalsøyri, med plikt til å ta imot reisande. Stamfaren til familien var Ole Lindset frå Sunnmøre, som flytta til Bergen i 1750 og tok familienamnet Lindstrøm. Jørgen Chr. Lindstrøm tok då over handelen etter Johan Joakim Møller på Lærdalsøyri, etter å ha gått i lære hos landhandlar Foss i Sogndal ei tid. Handelen heldt til i det som vart kjent som "Lindstrømbui" ved den gamle busshaldeplassen. Ei tid dreiv han også sildesalteri i Kinn.
I 1853 kjøpte Lindstrøm huset til apotekar Andreas Agersborg (sjå Lærdal Apotek). Dette huset var grunnstammen i det hotellkomplekset som Lindstrøm etterkvart bygde i sentrum. Hotellet hadde frå starten eige gardsbruk, og var stort sett sjølvberga med mjølk og kjøt til hotelldrifta.
Johan Christian vart dampskipsekspeditør i 1865, og bygde dampskipskai og pakkhus i Habben på sørsida av øyra.
Lindstrøm-familien styrde dampskipsekspedisjonen i Lærdal til 1967. Andre generasjon, Ole Johan Lindstrøm, overtok drifta av eigedomane berre 22 år gamal då faren døydde i 1871. Han kjøpte det såkalla "Kofoeden" på andre sida av gata frå sakførar Hans Ramshard Kofoed då denne vart sorenskrivar i Nordfjord. I 1885-1886 vart både hovudbygningen og "Kofoeden" påbygde og utstyrte med altanar i sveitsarstil. I 1898 kom så "Nybu" til. Dette huset står framleis med sin karakteristiske sveitsarstil i "hotellhagen".
