Fra gammelt av lå «Storlensa» i Glommavassdraget like nedenfor Bingsfossen. Derfra og nedover mot innsjøen Øyeren var elva stilleflytene, og det var uproblematisk å ta seg fram med båt. Lenge tilhørte Storlensa ved Bingen grunneierne i området, som belastet tømmerhandlerne som fikk sortert tømmeret sitt her med avgifter. I 1811 ble anlegget kjøpt av Det Ankerske Fideikomis - et selskap som var tuftet på verdiene i dødsboet etter trelasthandler Bernt Anker. I 1826 fikk trelasthandlerne som opererte i vassdraget skjøte på lensene. De organiserte sortering av tømmeret fra de store skogsområdene ved den nordre delen av vassdraget ved Bingen. Da myndighetene i 1850-åra begynte å prosjektere en jernbane som skulle gå østover fra hovedstaden, «Kongsvingerbanen», med bru over elva ved Fetsund litt lengre nede i vassdraget, forsto kjøpmennene i Christiania Tømmerdirektion at det kunne bli problematisk å få tømmer i bommer eller bunter forbi brustedet. Derfor kjøpte de eiendommen Lund nedenfor brustedet på Fetsund og en del tilstøtende strandarealer. Fra og med 1861 foregikk sorteringsarbeidet der. Man beholdt likevel anlegget på Bingen som attholds- eller beholdningslense, hvor man «stakk ut» passende tømmermengder hver dag, som fikk flyte stille ned mot sorteringslensene på Fetsund. Der ble tømmer som skulle til sagbrukene på Lillestrøm og langs Øyeren sortert fra det som skulle til kjøpere lengre sør med sikte på båtsleping til de nevnte sagbruksmiljøene eller til elveløpet ovenfor Mørkfossen. I år med stor tømmeromsetning kunne svært store mengder tømmer i perioder bli liggende ved attholds- eller beholdningslensa ved Bingen i påvente av sortering ved Fetsund.
Tømmeropphopning ved attholdslensa ved Bingen i Sørum, Akershus, i 1917. Fotografiet er tatt mot et bredt og stilleflytende elveleie, der det har hopet seg opp mye tømmer. Ifølge fløtingsadministrasjonens kalkyler var det på det meste mellom 5 og 5,5 millioner tømmerstokker i lensa ved Bingen. Presset på lensekonstruksjonen fra alt tømmeret og den stride vannstrømmen flommen førte med seg var stort, men lensa tålte påkjenningene. Det store trykket i de tømmermassene førte imidlertid til at en god del av stokkene er presset opp i vertikale posisjoner. Noe ble også presset over lensa, slik at det fløt videre nedover mot Fetsund og la seg mot bruanlegget der. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var tømmeret ovenfor attholdslensa ved Bingen stuvet sammen slik at vannflata ikke er synlig med unntak av et lite parti til høyre, om lag midt i bildet. Omkring dette partiet er ei stor gruppe fløtere i ferd med å arbeide ut virke som har ligget fastkilt. På motsatt side av elva skimtes et småkupert landskap med landbruksarealer, gardstun og små skogpartier.
Situasjonen på dette fotografiet er preget av den spesielle situasjonen i Glommafløtinga i 1917. Fra den delen av vassdraget som lå ovenfor Fetsund var det merket 14 152 835 stokker som skulle fløtes dette året. I tillegg lå 549 893 stokker igjen fra fjoråret, som også hadde vært en vanskelig fløtingssesong. Bortimot 15 millioner tømmerstokker skulle altså ekspederes via lenseanleggene ved Bingen og Fetsund. Oppgaven ble ikke enklere ved at våren 1917 ble uvanlig sein, slik at det drøyde lenge før fløtinga kunne starte. Arbeidet kom ikke skikkelig i gang før i slutten av mai. En kraftig regnflom ved St. Hans-tider satte imidlertid bokstavelig talt fart i virksomheten. Enorme tømmermengder hopet seg opp i lenseanlegget ved Bingen. Her ble den vanlige mannskapsmengden altfor liten til å ekspedere tømmeret videre i retning sorteringsanlegget ved Fetsund før presset på Bingslensa ble i største laget. Løsningen ble å doble bemanninga, og følgelig måtte det tas inn flere folk på Fetsund for å unngå opphopninger der også. Fløtingssesongen 1917 ble likevel uvanlig lang. Det siste tømmerslepet over Øyeren gikk i månedsskiftet november-desember.

Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte mange av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert.
