Fetsund ble lensested for tømmer fra den øvre delen av Glommavassdraget i 1861. Før den tid lå lenseanlegget ved Bingen, noen få kilometer høyere opp i vassdraget. Der ble løstømmer som kom flytende på det rennende vannet stanset mot et flytende stengsel av sammenkjedete tømmerstokker som ble støttet mot pæler og steinfylte tømmerkister. Alle stokkene var merket med påslåtte økseprofiler, symboler som fortalte hvem som hadde kjøpt hver enkelt stokk. Ved Bingen, og seinere ved Fetsund, skilte lensearbeiderne det tømmeret som skulle til kjøpere på Nedre Romerike eller i hovedstadsområdet fra det som skulle videre i retning Sarpsborg og Fredrikstad. Herfra måtte tømmeret samles i større enheter («flaker», «bommer» eller «sopper») før det kunne fløtes videre i retning sagbruk og trefordelingsbedrifter i nærområdet eller over den over 3 mil lange innsjøen Øyeren.
Flyttinga av «storlensa» fra Bingen til Fetsund må ses i sammenheng med andre ting prosjekter som ble realisert i dette området på samme tid. Øyeren er en stor, men grunn innsjø der vannstanden fra gammelt av svingte kraftig med vannføringa i Glommavassdraget. I store flomår kunne forskjellen mellom høyeste og laveste vannstand være opptil 12-13 meter, og i ekstremåret 1789 skal vannspeilet ha stått hele 17 meter over laveste registrerte nivå. Flommene var et problem for jordbrukerne, særlig ved den nordvestre enden av innsjøen, der lendet var flatt, slik at åker- og engarealer ofte ble oversvømt. Her var flommene også et problem fordi de satte veger under vann og gjorde det vanskelig å finne en trygg jernbanetrasé. I 1850-åra utredet myndighetene mulighetene for å regulere innsjøen, både med sikte på å spare bøndene for flommene og å kunne bygge jernbane mot Kongsvinger og Sverige. Utrederne mente at det kunne være mulig å senke høyeste flomvannstand 3,5 meter og å heve laveste høstvannstand 2,35 meter ved å utvide elveløpet ved Mørkfossen øverst i Nedre Glomma og deretter bygge en såkalt fermettedam ved denne fossen. Dette nesten 140 meter brede damanlegget sto ferdig i 1862. Samme år ble Kongsvingerbanen, som krysset Glomma på ei bru ved Fetsund, åpnet. Avstanden mellom steinkarene som bar denne brua skal ha vært hovedårsaken til at det ble bygd nye sorteringslenser for tømmer ved Fetsund. Lensestedet ved Bingen ble beholdt som beholdningsreservoar, et flytende tømmerlager som ble tappet porsjonsvis i «ladninger» med tømmerkvanta som det var realistisk at mannskapene ved sorteringslensene ved Fetsund skulle kunne greie å ekspedere i løpet av kommende døgn.
Det første fløtingsanlegget ved Fetsund ble bygd for Christiania Tømmerdirektion under ledelse av fløtingsinspektøren ved Bingen, Gunerius Soot, og hans assistent Hans Olaves Nielsen. Ei sorteringslense langs den vestre elvebredden sto klar til bruk sommeren 1861. Fire år seinere fikk Tømmerdirektionen ferdigstilt et lenseanlegg også på den østre sida av elva. I 1868 ble anleggene i vann komplettert ved at det ble etablert et opplagssted for flytende tømmer på Vestvollen, ved Svellet, der vann fra Glomma møter vann fra Nitelva og Lillestrøm. I mellomtida ble det også bygd kontorer og bolig for fløtingsinspektøren på Lund, på vestsida av elva, og boligbrakke for noen av arbeiderfamiliene tett inntil lenseanlegget.
På midten av 1800-tallet var det drøyt 100 sagbruk på Nedre Romerike. De lå på steder der det var mulig å hente energi fra fossefall. Mange lå ved Sagelva, som renner nordover fra Fjellhamar mot Nitelva ved Lillestrøm, men det fantes også sagbruk ved andre sideelver i regionen. En del av fløtingstømmeret på Glomma gikk til disse brukene. Det øvrige ble buksert over Øyeren. Transporten av tømmer og skurlast, til lands og til vanns, gav hardt tilkjempete inntekter til en stor del av befolkningen i området. Bukseringa av tømmer sørover Øyeren ble effektivisert da hjuldamperen «Kong Hakon» ble satt i drift i 1849. Den dro løstømmer i ringbommer sørover mot Sleppetangen ved Nedre Glommas utløp fra innsjøen. Etter jernbaneutbygginga (Hovedbanen Oslo-Eidsvoll fra 1854 og den nevnte Kongsvingerbanen fra 1862) skjedde mesteparten av trelasttransporten med tog. Også noe av rundlasten ble tatt opp fra slusene ved Fetsund og lastet på tog til nye sagbruk som etter sagbruksprivilegiene ble opphevet i 1860 grodde fram på steder uten fossefall, men med jernbaneforbindelse og nærhet til utskipingshavn. Mesteparten av tømmeret, også det som skulle til de mange nye dampsagene på Lillestrøm, ble fortsatt transportert på vann. I begynnelsen av 1860-åra kom det nok en dampbåt som bukserte tømmer i denne regionen, D/S Øieren.
Med den papirproduserende treforedlingsindustrien som ble etablert på 1800-tallet ble det stadig flere, men grannere tømmerstokker. Samtidig økte antallet kjøpere av fløtingsvirke fra Glommavassdraget. Denne utviklinga gjorde det nødvendig å bygge ut kapasiteten og utvikle driftsteknologien ved Fetsund lenser. Richard Christensen Furuholmen, som bestyrte et lenseanlegg i Nedre Glomma, utviklet noe som på Fetsund ble kalt en «soppemaskin», en flytende innretning som kunne bunte tømmeret i flere kryssende lag, en ganske kompakt enhet som ble kalt «soppe». Soppene var langt mer robuste under sleping i vind enn ringbommene hadde vært. Tidlig på 1900-tallet konstruerte en annen lensemann, Arnt Svaredal, en mosemaskin som buntet stokkene parallelt, omsluttet av jernvaiere, såkalte «grimer». Fra 1905 var det slutt med ringbomfløting på Øyeren. Mosemaskinene ble montert nederst i lensekompleksene, i enden av lange, 4-5 meter brede «renner» eller «kanaler» der tømmeret kom langsomt flytende. I den travle perioden tidlig på 1900-tallet var det fire «sjunker» – tømmersorteringsstasjoner – ved den vestre elvebredden og to på østsida av elva ved Fetsund. Mesteparten av tømmeret skulle til industrien ved nederst i vassdraget, i Sarpsborg- og Fredrikstad-regionen. Dette «Øyer-tømmeret» ble soppet sams, for det skulle løsfløtes videre når det nådde Nedre Glommas utløp fra Øyeren. «Strøm-tømmeret», som hadde merker som viste at de skulle til et av sagbrukene i nærområdet, til Fladeby eller Lillestrøms cellulosefabrikker, ble samlet i sidelommer og «soppet» manuelt, «merke for merke» og slept til bedriftenes tømmerinntak (kjerrater).
Etter det store krakket som rammet skogbruket og skogindustrien i 1921 krympet fløtingskvantumet i Glomma. Lavkonjunkturen ble langvarig, og i 1930-åra innså fløtingsdirektør Johs. Johannesen at lenseanlegget måtte bygges om og gis en mer kostnadseffektiv drift. I 1937-38 ble de seks sjunkene erstattet av to større anlegg, Lundslensa ved vestre elvebredd og Prestlensa på østsida. Begge hadde to mosemaskiner. Etter 2. verdenskrig steg tømmerprisene og fløtingskvantumet igjen. I slutten av 1950-åra ble lensene nok en gang ombygd, denne gangen for å spare den manuelle arbeidsinnsatsen som måtte til når Strøm-tømmeret ble dratt motstrøms inn i et «soppelag» for finsortering.
Utover i 1960-åra begynte de som hadde lenseanlegget på Fetsund som arbeidsplass å merke at stadig mer av tømmertransporten ble overført til jernbanen og lastebileierne. Driften av Prestlensa ved østre elvebredd ble avviklet etter 1965-sesongen. Samtidig skrantet den lokale skogindustrien. Følgelig ble det stadig mindre Strøm-tømmer. Følgelig ble også virksomheten ved opplagsanlegget ved Vestvollen avviklet. Fra 1972 var det bare storbedriften Borregaard i Sarpsborg som fikk fløtet tømmeret sitt i Glomma. Dette innebar at tømmersorteringa ved Fetsund lenser opphørte. Soppinga og slepinga av sopper sørover mot Sleppetangen fortsatte, nå med slepebåten Mørkfos som trekkraft. Det gikk 160-200 sopper – 80-100 000 slipstokker i hvert slikt slep. Ei slepevending tok 12-18 timer.
I de mest aktive åra skal det ha vært oppimot 300 arbeidere knyttet til lenseanlegget på Fetsund. De aller fleste av dem var sesongansatte med arbeid og inntekt fra lensene bare i sommerhalvåret. Antallet slike arbeidsfolk krympet noe etter de nevnte ombyggingene av lenseanlegget. Etter den nevnte nedleggelsen av Prestlensa (1965) kunne for eksempel arbeidsstyrken reduseres fra 118 til 60 mann. Et mekanisk retteanlegg og vaiertrekk som dro stokkene parallelt mot mosemaskinene fra slutten av dette tiåret muliggjorde ei halvering av den gjenværende arbeidsstokken. Likevel ble det stadig vanskeligere å rekruttere lokale folk til sesongarbeid. Dette ble løst ved å engasjere karer som drev i skogen i vinterstid og som ved å arbeide ved Fetsund lenser i sommersesongen fikk sysselsetting året rundt.
I februar 1984 meldte Borregaard Industries Limited at de tok sikte på å fortsette avvikle sin fløtingsaktivitet i Glomma ved utgangen av 1985-sesongen. Trompetisten Harry Kvebæk, som hadde vokst opp i lensemiljøet, hadde sett denne utviklinga komme og insisterte på at anlegget måtte bevares som kulturminne. Ideen ble forelagt så vel fløtingsledelsen som offentlige instanser på forskjellige administrative nivåer. Etter at nedleggelsen var en realitet – da Glomma fellesfløtingsforening i henhold til vassdragsloven skulle fjerne alle fløtingsinstallasjoner fra vassdraget – kom det et midlertidig fredningsvedtak. Denne beslutningen ble stadfestet i 1989, og året etter ble Fetsund lensemuseum åpnet. Museet ble tidlig et av de teknisk-industrielle kulturminnene som mottok vedlikeholds- og driftsstøtte fra Riksantikvaren. Museet har vært drevet sammen med Nordre Øyeren naturinformasjonssenter, etter hvert med det Akershusmuseet som administrativ overbygning.
I 2003 skrev Elin Mortensen denne artikkelen i det lokalhistoriske tidsskriftet «Årringen»:
«Soppemaskinene ved Fetsund Lenser
I tømmerfløtingen ble mye energi brukt på å fløte tømmer over stillestående vann. Når tømmeret kom til en innsjø med lite strøm måtte det derfor bygges et lenseanlegg der tømmeret ble buntet og samlet for å bli slept over sjøen. Ved lenseanleggene ble også en del av tømmeret sortert ut og fløtet til lokale sagbruk.
Til å begynne med ble alt tømmeret samlet og buntet for hånd. I Fetsund samlet man tømmeret i «flak». Det finnes fotografier av flakene, og en opptelling viser at de største kunne inneholde fem lag tømmer á 24 stokker, samt et øverste lag med 12 stokker som var vendt på tvers. Tømmer som var buntet maskinelt hadde stokker som vendte samme vei. Her ble det brukt betegnelsen «sopper» eller «moser»:
Soppeapparatet blir oppfunnet
Etter hvert som tømmermengden tiltok, tok det selvsagt lang tid å bunte tømmeret for hånd. I 1876 oppfant lensebestyrer ved Furuholmen lenser i Østfold, R. C. Furuholmen, den første, maskinen, eller soppeapparatet, som kunne bunte tømmeret maskinelt. Prinsippet bygde på at tømmeret ble lagt i kryss, oppå hverandre, og at hver lag inneholdt ca. 28 stokker. Første og andre lag ble krysslagt samme plass, deretter ble flåten vendt 90 grader og et siste lag ble anlagt vinkelrett på lag to. Nedenfor Øyeren var «sopper» med andre ord betegnelsen på krysslagt tømmer som var buntet maskinelt og lå oppå hverandre.
Tømmermengden fortsatte å tilta, og i 1884 ble maskinen erstattet av en ny som kunne svinge 90 grader slik at soppen ble liggende på tvers til den var ferdig. Apparatet kunne også soppe flere lag tømmer enn det gamle. På Hvidsten lense hadde man fra 1885 hydraulisk akkumulatordrift der maskinen kunne soppe ni lag med tømmer. Enda et soppeapparat av samme type ble opfunnet i 1895 av R. C. Furuholmens sønn Gun. Furuholmen. I1901 utviklet Arnt Svartedal soppeapparatet som ble brukt av Glomma fellesfløtingsforening frem til fløtingen opphørte i 1985.
Arnt Svartedals soppeapparat
Maskinen Arnt Svartedal oppfant var annerledes enn de forrige, og bygde på at tømmeret ble ført inn i apparatet på tvers av strømretningen. To innbyrdes forbundne pongtonger på 60 meters lengde dannet kjørebane for en bevegelig bro som var forsynt med tre sverd. I starten var sverdene hevet og tømmeret ble fløtet inn i maskinen. Så ble sverdene senket og tømmeret presset mot en fast bro som også var forsynet med sverd. En vaier ble lagt om tømmeret, sverdene på den faste broen ble hevet og soppen kunne kjøres ut av maskinen. I 1901 talte en soppe 300 stokker, men til sist da tømmerdimensjonen var blitt mindre var detr 500 stokker i en bunt.
I begynnelsen ble Arnt Svartedals soppeapparat brukt på Furuholmen som et supplement til de to andre. Ved alle de nye lenseanlegg på den tida ble Arnt Svartedals soppeapparat valgt. Det samme gjaldt Fetsund lenser (1905) og Lillehammer lenser (1909).
Soppeapparater ved Fetsund lenser
I 1898-99 ble det bygd nytt lenseanlegg ved Fetsund. Det omfattet også et soppeapparat av den type R. C. Furuholmen hadde oppfunnet. Det var meningen at apparatet skulle brukes til å flake Lillestrømtømmeret, men det ble ingen suksess da arbeidet tok for lang tid til tross for at arbeiodsstokken ble økt. Dessuten var apparatet plassert ved sorteringsrennen midt i elva, og ble til hinder for det øvrige arbeidet ved anlegget.
Et dampdrevet soppeapparat av tre ble tatt i bruk i 1905. Samtidig ble det slutt med å føre tømmer i bom over Øyeren. I 1907 gikk lensene over til elektrisk drift, og det ble bygd to nye apparater av tre, samt ett av stål. I alt var det nå fore soppeapparater i drift ved Fetsund lenser, tre som var elektrisk drevet, og et som var dampdrevet.
Elanlegget til drift av soppemaskinen sto i det «Gamle verkstedet». Det ble trukket av en lokomobil, som i mai 1907 ble levert av Hamar jernstøperi. Det dampdrevne kraftanlegg på 55 HK var i drift ved lensene fra 1907 til 1929. Da gikk man over til å benytte kraft fra Akershus elektrisitetsverk. Maskinen ved Leirtangen var i 1915 dampdrevet, men det året ble det montert en ny 30 HK elektrisk motor som ble drevet med strøm fra Fet elverk.
I 1911 ble apparatet fra 1905 kassert og erstattet med et av stål. Frem til 1916 ble apparatene som hadde trekonstruksjon erstattet av jernkonstruksjon. De fore soppeappartene var i drift til 1966, men etter nedleggingen av anlegget på vestsiden av Glomma var bare to i drift frem til 1985.
På Fetsund lenser er det i dag bevart to av soppeapparatene fra 1907 og 1911. Apparatet fra 1911 ble i 1993-2003 restaurerte og kan ses i lenseanlegget ved Blikkomøya.»

På flåtegangene langs renna gikk lensearbeiderne med langskaftete fløterhaker og passet på at stokkene fløt som de skulle. De kunne flytte seg fra den ene til den andre sida av renna via lave stålbruer som var lagt mellom flåtegangene. Til høyre i bildet ser vi ei flytende brakke, der arbeiderne kunne søke ly i matpausene. I bakgrunnen ser vi brua for bilvegen fra Fetsund og østover (mot Bjørkelangen) og bakenfor (og under) den igjen ser vi fagverksbrua der togene på Kongsvingerbanen passerte Glomma.
Lenseanlegget på fotografiet ble bygd i 1937-38 som erstatning for de eldre «sjunkene». Prestlensa fikk, i likhet med Lundslensa ved den vestre elvebredden, to soppeapparater for bunting av tømmeret. Anleggene ble noe ombygd i 1959, med sikte på redusere behovet for manuell arbeidskraft noe, blant annet ved å forenkle utsorteringa av «strømtømmeret» (som skulle til lokale bedrifter). Dette kan ha vært bakgrunnen for at dette fotografiet ble tatt påfølgende fløtingssesong. Mengden fløtingsvirke i Glomma var imidlertid synkende utover i 1960-åra, og etter 1965-sesongen ble det bestemt at bruken av Prestlensa skulle opphøre. Fra da av var det bare Lundslensa ved den vestre elvebredden som var i drift.
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte størstedelen av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert.
