Kongsvingerbanen – den første mellomriksbanen mellom Norge og Sverige – ble åpnet høsten 1862. Opprinnelig var det meningen at traséen skulle gå langs vestsida av Glomma, men sivilingeniør Carl Abraham Pihl (1825-1897) som arbeidet med detaljplanlegginga for linjeføringa fant ut at det ville bli for krapp kurve ved Bingen. Etter å ha tenkt og kalkulert et alternativ, med bru som krysset elva ved Fetsund og gikk på østsida av elva opp til Blaker, kom han til at det var penger å spare, samtidig som man oppnådde den fordelen det var å knytte østsida av Glomma til jernbanenettet. Det ville riktignok bli litt krappe kurver ved brua, men ettersom den skulle bygges i kort avstand fra den prosjekterte Fetsund stasjon, ville dette uansett bli et sted der togene skulle holde lav hastighet. Lokalkjente folk trodde ikke at det var fare for at brua kunne bli truet av isgang, og Pihl mente at den heller ikke ville skape problemer for tømmerfløtinga. Den brua som sto klar ved åpningen fore år seinere var ei pælebru av tre. Den var bortimot 400 meter lang før den møtte steinkarene mot land. Trebrua kvilte på pæler med 5,7 meters mellomrom. Den var, i samarbeid med vegmyndighetene, bygd så bred at den i tillegg til skinnegangen også kunne utstyres med en vegbane for gående og for hestekjøretøyer. Dette var naturligvis et stort framskritt for befolkningen ved nordenden av Øyeren, for inntil da hadde de, som navnet Fetsund antyder, måttet gå i båt for å krysse elva. Kombinasjonen av store flommer og betydelige tømmermengder som skulle passere brua viste seg imidlertid å bli en større trussel mot konstruksjonene enn Pihl hadde forutsett. Det viste seg at tømmeret hadde lett for å pakke seg i de trange åpningene under brua, og med det presset mye vann og økte strømhastigheter representerte, oppsto det i flere tilfeller skader på trekonstruksjonene. I slutten av 1860-åra ble det bestemt at brua skulle bygges om. Den skulle få en stor – bortimot 40 meter bred – åpning med jernoverbygning, som måtte kvile på steinkar. Dette tiltaket viste seg ikke tilstrekkelig som løsning på de problemene flommene og opphopinga av fløtingsvirke skapte. I 1870-åra ble det derfor arbeidet med å erstatte de gjenværende bærekonstruksjonene av tre med skruepæler av jern. Arbeidet ble stort sett utført i vintersesongen, da vannstanden var lav og strømhastigheten beskjeden, og nattestid, slik at prosjektet ikke skulle forstyrre togtrafikken. Våren 1910 kom det en ny storflom. Lensene ovenfor brua sviktet, og en enorm tømmermengde la seg mot brukonstruksjonen. Brua var åpenbart truet, men den holdt. Etter flommen var det enighet om at problemene fra 1910-flommen helst ikke burde gjenta seg. Både forsterking av eksisterende konstruksjoner og bygging av helt ny bru, med noe større spenn mellom åpningene enn på den gamle, ble vurdert. Man valgte å satse på ny bru. Den ble plassert like ovenfor den eksisterende, slik at togtrafikken kunne gå på den gamle brua mens den nye ble bygd. Dette var sikkert lurt, for det ble et tidkrevende prosjekt. Arbeidet med nybrua ble påbegynt i 1912 og fullført først i 1918. Også denne gangen måtte fundamenteringsarbeidene utføres ved lavvann vinterstid. Det ble pælet med en dampdrevet rambukk. Brukarene ble støpt i betong med utvendig kledning av hoggen naturstein. De sju bruspennene, som veier om lag 250 tonn hver, ble klinket sammen på en plattform på elvas vestside, oppstrøms i forhold til de ferdige brukarene. Derfra ble jernkonstruksjonene fraktet ut på elva på pongtonger med svære jernstativ og montert i perioden 1916-18. Trafikken over den nye brua startet sommeren 1918. Deretter ble den gamle Fetsundbrua revet. En del av komponentene derfra ble gjenbrukt i mindre bruanlegg andre steder.

Fotografiet er tatt fra østre elvebredd mot det brede, stilleflytende elveleiet, som preges av tømmer som ligger sammenhopet med stokkene sprikende i mange retninger. Årsaken var åpenbart den lave høydeforskjellen mellom vannflata og brua til venstre på bildeflata. En del stokker har blitt liggende med endene mot brua, slik at de skapte et stengsel for bakenforliggende løstømmer. På bakkekammen i bakgrunnen et kulturlandskap med gardstun, jorder atskilt av skogstriper.
Den avbildete tømmeropphopningen ved jernbanebrua i Fetsund var ikke den første som truet denne konstruksjonen. Den utløste imidlertid et arbeid for å få reist ei ny og mer solid jerbanebru på dette stedet, et prosjekt som ble sluttført i 1918, jfr. rubrikken andre opplysninger. Skogbruk. Fløting av tømmer. Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Like før jul i 1984, da det var klart at det gikk mot ledleggelse av virksomheten, vedtok styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening at fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen skulle overlates til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Samlinga ble overført til museet i Elverum året etter. Den besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte en del av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert. I 2012 utgav Fetsund lenser/Akershusmuseet ei bok med tittelen «Stemmer fra elva», med Thomas Støvind Berg som hovedforfatter. Denne publikasjonen presenterer mye materiale fra miljøet rundt lensestedet Fetsund.
