Spilflåter i Valmen, ved utløpet av Osensjøen i Åmot, Hedmark. Spillflåtene ble brukt til å varpe eller buksere tømmer over det store vannspeilet. Tømmeret ble samlet i «bommer», altså omsluttet av flytende tømmerstokker som var lenket sammen ende mot ende slik at de - sett i fugleperspektiv - framsto som en diger, dråpeformet ring, som var fortøyd i flåtene. Flåtene ble lagd av rundtømmer, som var lagt i ei flo og bundet sammen av kantstokker på oversida og «flåtåband» på undersida. Flåtene skulle være om lag 12 alen lange og arbeidsplattformen var vanligvis sammensatt av drøyt 20 parallelle stokker. Sentralt på dette planet var det montert en sylinder - et gangspill - med ei lang tross med en "dregg" (et anker) i ytterenden. Denne trossa ble rodd så langt framover i ønsket bevegelsesretning som trossa rakk i en robåt og sluppet ned på botnen, der den fant feste i oppstikkende steinblokker. Deretter kunne fløterne starte «spellinga» eller «dansinga» - rundgangen på flåten der fire karer fikk gangspillet til å rotere ved å skyve to krysslagte stenger framfor seg. På denne måten trakk de flåten og den bakenforliggende ringbommen stadig nærmere dreggfestet. Når de nådde fram dit, hevet de dreggen og rodde den på nytt framover i ønsket bevegelsesretning og slapp den ned på botnen. Ofte arbeidet to flåtelag sammen - det ene «spelte» mens det andre kokte kaffe og kvilte. Slik ble rollene bytte hver gang fløterne nådde fram til dreggen. Dette fotografiet illustrerer ei slik oppgaveveksling. Før slepebåten Trysilknut ble sjøsatt på Osensjøen i 1914 var dette den dominerende metoden for buksering av tømmer over Osensjøen. Også etter den tid ble spellflåtene en del brukt, fortrinnsvis til landrensk - oppsamling og buksering av tømmer som lå og drev langs strendene. Denne driftsmåten var mer mannskaps- og tidkrevende - og dermed mer kostnadskrevende - enn buksering ved hjelp av den dampdrevne slepebåten.

Dette fotografiet er fra album nummer 2 av totalt 72 nummererte album fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforening (tidligere Christiania Tømmerdirektion). Tømmerfløtinga i Glomma ble avviklet i 1985. Samtidig ble også fellesfløtingsforeningen oppløst. Ledelsen i organisasjonen opptatt av at materiale som kunne fortelle om den store betydningen tømmerfløtinga hadde hatt langs Glommavassdraget skulle bevares. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i sitt opprinnelige rom på Lund ved Fetsund lenser. Der er materialet ordnet, først under veiledning av Øivind Vestheim fra Norsk Skogmuseum, seinere av ansatte ved lensemuseet på Fetsund, som vokste fram i åra etter at fløtinga var avviklet. Fotografiene fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforening (kopier i album og film) ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum. Her ble materialet reprofotografert og, etter hvert, elektronisk registrert.
