Fotografiet er fra innmarka på garden Hov i Løten, der det med få års mellomrom ble funnet to geværer bemerkelsesverdig langt nede i bakken. Det første funnet ble gjort av Gunnar Søberg (1910-1988) vinteren 1965, da det skulle legges ny kloakkledning under det som sommerstid brukte å være en grøderik åker. Finneren kontaktet konservator Tore Fossum (1926-2017) ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Museet bestilte en radiologisk undersøkelse av geviret, og analysene fra C14-laboratoriet i Trondheim tydet på at det var drøyt 8 000 år gammelt. Fossum søkte bistand fra det naturhistoriske miljøet i Oslo, som gjorde oppfølgingsundersøkelser i jordprofiler nær funnstedet, både for å danne seg inntrykk av det økosystemet elgen som felte dette geviret hadde levd i, og for å kunne skissere ei mer langsiktig vegetasjonsutvikling i området. Dette fotografiet viser ei av grøftene der det ble tatt jordprøver med fem centimeters intervaller - fra de underste avsetningene om lag 145 centimeter under bakken opp til cirka 30 centimeter under bakken. Derfra og oppover var jorda omrotet ved pløying etter at at området ble oppdyrket med sikte på jordbruksproduksjon. Prøvene ble undersøkt ved pollenanalyse, som gav grunnlag for å skissere ei utvikling fra tida like etter istidas slutt, da det var en liten sjø i dette området med sedimenter fra smeltevannet i bunnsonen. Forskerne anslo at det tok cirka 1 000 år før det ble noe særlig organisk liv i dette miljøet. Over det sterile bunnlaget, på det stratigrafiske nivået elggeviret hadde ligget, fant man et siltlag - også avsatt under vann - med et rikt innhold av plantepollen, skalldyr og snegler. Slik kunne forskerne følge utviklinga videre oppover i jordlagene, som avspeilte hvordan området endret seg fra å være tjern, til å bli sump, myr og endelig et tørrere, dyrkbart areal - med økosystemer i stadig endring. Gevirfunnet ble utstilt i Norsk Skogbruksmuseums nye skogbruksutstilling (1972), og Kari E. Henningsmoen, Jan Økland og Per Størmer skrev vitenskapelige artikler basert på undersøkelsene ved Hov i Løten i museets årbok nr. 7 (1975). Høsten 1974 gjorde Johan Skårholen nok gevirfunn på eiendommen, da det skulle graves ned en kloakkum et par hundrede meter fra det forrige funnstedet. Også denne gangen utløste funnet naturhistoriske oppfølgingsundersøkelser. Det var kollegene og ektefellene Gunnar Henningsmoen og Kari Egede Henningsmoen som innhentet prøvene fra denne andre undersøkelsen på Hov.

En radiologisk analyse tydet på at geviret hadde ligget der i om lag 8 500 år. Dermed ble det interessant å forteta en naturhistorisk undersøkelse i jordsmonnet der geviret hadde ligget. Dette var ikke første gang det ble gjort en slik undersøkelse på Hov. Også i 1965 ble det funnet et gevir som viste seg å være cirka 8 000 år gammelt. Funnet utløste oppfølgingsundersøkelser med pollenanalytisk og limnologisk ekspertise fra Universitetet i Oslo. Det var Kari og Gunnar Henningsmoen som den 7. og 8. september 1974 kom til Løten for å ta jordprøver med sikte på å kartlegge biologiske forhold på funnstedet gjennom årtusener.
