Ulvsjøene ligger i Enavassdraget på østsida av Osensjøen, som ligger i grensetraktene mellom Trysil og Åmot kommuner i Hedmark. Vassdraget har sine kilder i Trysil, men utløp i Åmot. Fløtinga her var vanskelig, blant annet fordi tømmeret måtte gjennom de to Ulvsjøene. Dette arbeidet aleine kunne fra gammelt av ta opptil en måned, mens fløtinga i de fleste andre sidevassdragene til Osensjøen oftest var unnagjort i løpet av to uker. På 1800-tallet ble det brukt små flåter med liggende bom og kort trosse. Disse bommene hadde hendler som flåtemannskapet dro i, og som ble kalt «horn». Følgelig ble flåtetypen kalt for «okse». Omkring 1910 begynte fløterne i Ulvsjøen å bruke den større spillflåtetypen som i lang tid hadde vært brukt på Osensjøen, og som vi ser på dette fotografiet. Slike flåter skulle være omtrent 12 alen eller 15 halvmeter i kvadrat, og besto av to lag tømmer, samt kantstokker med tollepinner, for flåten ble nemlig rodd tilbake over sjøen hver gang det skulle hentes ny tømmerbom. Midt på flåten var det ei såkalt «tønne», en sylindrisk bom, som var forankret i sentrum av flåten. I denne tønna var den cirka 200 meter lange trossa med anker – «krabba» – i enden forankret. Når ringbommen med løstømmer var forankret i den ene sida av flåten, og krabba var rodd så langt trossa rakk i den retningen man ville trekke tømmeret, kunne karene begynne å «spelle». Det innebar at fore menn gikk rundt og rundt på flåten og skjøv fire stenger – «årer» – slik at trossa viklet seg opp på tønna. Når man nådde fram til krabba, ble den trukket hevet, løftet opp i en lettbåt og rodd videre framover i sjøen. Deretter fortsatte man å «spelle» inntil man nådde fram til sundet mellom de to Ulvsjøene, hvor bommene måtte løses opp for å få tømmeret gjennom en trang passasje, eller fram til oset fra den nordre sjøen, hvor tømmeret skulle over i rennende elvevatn. Veteraner som ble intervjuet i 1969, som var siste sesong med denne typen fløting, fortalte at det var 30 mann involvert i denne formen for fløting på Ulvsjøene på det meste. Disse var fordelt på tre arbeidslag, som var i virksomhet i om lag 30 dager hver fløtingssesong. En gjennomsnitts tømmerbom skal på Ulvsjøene skal ha inneholdt om lag 2 000 kubikkmeter virke. Flåtene ble vinterlagret i spillflåtehus som sto i standsonen, så lavt at flåtene kunne flyte ut etter at fløtingsdammen ble satt. Ett slikt hus ble flyttet til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum etter at spillflåtefløtinga på Ulvsjøene var avviklet (jfr. SJF-B. 0025). Huset var en gave fra Tverrena fellesfløtningsforening.

I sentrum av denne er det reist en cirka en meter høy sylinder, som ble kalt «tønna». På toppen av denne roterbare konstruksjonen er det lagt to trestenger - «årer» - i kryss. Dette er et gangspill med ei cirka 200 meter lang trosse med et anker - kalt «krabba» - i ytterenden. Krabba ble rodd framover i sjøen, så langt trossa rakk, og sluppet ned på botnen, hvor den forhåpentligvis festet seg. Deretter kunne karene «spille» - dreie gangspillet rundt og rundt - slik at flåten og en bakenforliggende tømmerbom sakte men sikkert ble trukket mot ankringspunktet. Når de nådde fram dit, ble krabba hevet og rodd videreframover i den retningen man ønsket å ha tømmereet. En av robåtene som ble brukt ved slike forflytninger skimtes til venstre i bildet. Dette fotografiet er fra et feltarbeid Tore Fossum fra Norsk Skogmuseum gjorde ved Ulvsjøene i slutten av mai 1969, antakelig etter å ha fått tips om at dette kom til å bli siste gang han ville få mulighet for å dokumentere kommersiell fløting med spillflåte i Glommavassdraget. Fossum tok bilder sjøl, men hadde også med seg fotografen Kjell Søgård. Han intervjuet dessuten fløterveteranen Johan Sjølie (f. 1893).
