Torstrand dampsag i Larvik i Vestfold, fotografert i 1919. Dette er et eksteriørbilde, tatt fra sjøsida. Vi ser gavlen på et stort saghus, oppført i bordkledd bindingsverk. I røstepartiet er det vinduer, som skulle gi lysinnsig til produksjonslokalene. Fotografiet viser ellers to kjerrater - i dette tilfellet noe buete skråplan med endeløse kjettinger som dro tømmerstokker opp mot den øvre delen av saghuset, hvor de antakelig ble skåret til konstruksjonsvirke. Der hvor kjerratene møter saghusveggen er det en utvendig, åpen arbeidsplattform. I forgrunnen ser vi flytende tømmer i opptaksområdet til den ene kjerraten (til venstre), som ikke var i bruk da dette fotografiet ble tatt. Den andre var derimot i drift, og der skimter vi også en mann som «matet» kjerraten. Vi ser også en av kollegene hans foran et lite hus med pulttak, muligens et motorhus, ved denne kjerraten. I bakgrunnen ei høy, rund teglsteinspipe, antakelig for dampmaskineriet som drev dette sagbruket.
I A. St. Langeland og Gunnar Christie Wasbergs bok «Larviks historie 3. bind 1885-1940 (1963:215), nevnes dampsaga på Torstrand i følgende tekstsekvens:
«Torstrand Dampsag, som hadde tilhørt L. Backer, ble i slutten av 1880-årene overtatt av firmaet P. & P. I. Berg (brødrene Emil og Thoralf Berg). Den lå på den såkalte «Røhmketomt». I 1893 solgte de den til D. Jacobsen, som gikk i gang med kassefabrikasjon ved siden av mer tilfeldig skur. Han solgte igjen anlegget, som hadde brent ned og var bygd opp igjen i 1895, til et interessentskap med en aksjekapital på 35 000 kroner. Bedriften tok navnet Larviks Kassefabrikk, og drev det en tid stort. Men i 1914 ble selskapet oppløst og bedriften ble solgt til et nystiftet selskap, som under inntrykket av de gode konjunkturer igjen tok opp skur og høvling for eksport. Fra nå av het firmaet A/S Thorstrands Dampsag og Høvleri. Det ble ledet av J. M. Hansen Just.»
I februar 2021 fikk Norsk skogmuseum en e-post fra lokalhistorikeren Tor Bjørvik, som nettopp hadde utgitt boka "Sagbruk i Larvik" sammen med Reidar Bergene Holm. Bjørvik mente at dette fotografiet ikke viste Torstrand dampsag, slik fotografens påskrift indikerte, men Laagens dampsag. Etter å ha studert gamle fotografier av de to sagbrukene i den nevnte boka, valgte museets registrator å stole mer på Bjørvik enn på fotografens påskrift på den bildekopien dette motivet er skannet fra.

Laagens dampsag, som lå i daværende Hedrum kommune, på vestsida av Lågen, ikke langt fra utløpet, mellom Gloppe bru og jernbanebrua. Dette var ei av mange dampsager som ble etablert etter at «Lov om Saugbrugsvæsenet» i 1854 fastslo at «Fra 1ste Januar 1860 skal al Sagskur være fri saaledes, at det er Enhver tilladt at tilvirke al Slags skaaren Last til Udskibning paa hvilken Maade og med hvilke Indretninger han bedst veed, vil og kan.» Loven åpnet altså for sagbruksdrift på steder der det ikke var fossefall og gav fri etableringsrett til alle som var villige til å ta den risikoen det innebar å investere i den da nye dampteknologien. En av dem som viste slik risikovilje var Frederik Wilhelm Treschow (1814-1901). I 1835 hadde han kjøpt mye av den eiendomsporteføljen som hadde tilhørt det gamle Larvik grevskap. Etableringa av Laagens dampsag skulle gjøre det enklere å produsere trelast av tømmer Treschow fikk avvirket i skogene han eide i Numedalslågens nedslagsfelt. Dette tømmeret ble fløtet på vassdraget. Ved å bygge ei dampsag på det nevnte stedet kunne Treschow ta råstoffet direkte inn for industriell bearbeiding fra lenseanlegget nederst i Lågen, uten å måtte transportere det gjennom Larviks havnebasseng til sagbruket ved Farriselva. Laagens dampsag ble satt i drift sommeren 1865. Bruket hadde tre større og ei mindre rammesag, to dobbelte og ei enkel sirkelsag samt to kappsager. Maskinene ble drevet av to dampmaskiner som kunne yte til sammen 80 hestekrefter. Laagens dampsag ble herjet av brann i mars 1880, men anlegget ble gjenoppbygd. Dette fotografiet viser den produksjonsanlegget som ble gjenoppbygd etter brannen. I 1890-åra skal Laagens dampsag ha hatt et årlig tømmerforbruk på cirka 25 000 tylfter (300 000 stokker). Virksomheten gav arbeid og inntekt til cirka 70 mann. Lønnsomheten ved Treschow-familiens sagbruk ble, i likhet med annen skogbasert industri i Norge, hardt rammet av det kraftige prisfallet i markedene tidlig i 1920-åra. Ledelsen i Treschow-konsernet valgte da å avvikle Laagens dampsag og samle skurlastproduksjonen ved Farriselva. Etter den tid ble bygningene etter Laagens dampsag stående uten skurlastproduksjon i flere tiår. I nyere tid har byggevareselskapet Carlsen Fritzøe Handel tilhold på den gamle sagbrukstomta, med adresse Lågaveien 6, Larvik.

Originalkopien til dette fotografiet er arkivert i en svart ringperm museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad har merket «NLH» fordi denne bildesamlinga, som stort sett består av kontaktkopier, skal være overlatt Norsk Skogmuseum fra det skogfaglige miljøet ved Norges landbrukshøgskole. En god del av motivene er publisert i skogbruksdelen av tobindsverket «Landbruksboken» som tidligere høgskoledirektør Nils Ødegaard redigerte og fikk utgitt i 1919. Det er nærliggende å tro at det var disse bildene redaktøren og de skogfaglige bidragsyterne (Paul Akre, Agnar Barth, Jakob Kaurin, Albert K. Myhrwold, Wilhelm M. Schøyen og Nordal Wille) valgte blant når de skulle illustrere skogbruksdelen av boka. Dette motivet er ikke blant dem som ble publisert.
