Den 16. februar 2024 publiserte Sjur Haga Bringeland en artikkel om laksefisket i Tana og diskusjonen om invasjonen av pukkellaks i Tana i avisa «Dag og Tid». I innledningen til denne artikkelen skisserer han denne elvas historiske betydning som laksevassdrag:
«Tana er ei verd for seg. Vassdsraget gjer dei fleste norske lakseelvar til bekkar. Både Namsen og Gaula blir gjerne kalla dronninga blant elvane våre. Tana lyt i så fall vera keisarinna, for ho er Europas viktigaste vassdrag for atlanterhavslaksen. Den lakseførande strekninga er minst 1 100 kilometer, og sideelvane har kring 30 eigne bestandar. Det er faktisk større genetiskeulikskapar mellom laksebestandane innanfor Tana-vassdraget enn mellom bestandane i Troms og Trøndelag og nedover på Vestlandet.
I toppåra på 1970-talet var den samla fangsten i elva og i Tanafjorden på over 500 tonn. Om me reknar med ei gjennomsnittsvekt på litt over fire kilo, blir det meir enn 100 000 laks. Lenge var halvparten av all elvefanga norsk laks Tana-laks. Den norske sportsfiskerekorden er og herifrå: ein hannlaks på 32,5 kilo, teken på sluk ved Storfossen 7. juli 1951.
Men dette er historie. I dag har keisarinna sige i kne. Fiskepresset var for hardt for lenge, både på norsk og finsk side. Særleg gjekk det ut over bestandane øvst i vassdraget, der fisken måtte symja forbi milevis med stongfiskarar og tradisjonelle fangstreiskapar som drivgarn og stengsel. Ein reknar med at mellom 70 og 80 prosent av all oppvandrande Tana-laks ble fanga, i år etter år. I de fjernaste sideelvane kunne det vera opp mot 90 prosent. Når fiskarane ikkje lenger hausta av overskotet, men minimumsbestanden som trengst for effektiv gyting, hamna Tana i ei negativ spiral. Ein byra å eta av såkornet.
På norsk side blei det i år 2000 avliva over 33 000 laks. 20 år seinare var fangsten redusert med 90 prosent, til knappe 3 300 laks. I 2021 ble elva stengd for fiske, noko ho framleis er. Og som om ikkje det skulle vera nok: Tana-laksen må no og hanskast med pukkellaksen. …»

Akkurat denne stengselsplassen – joddosadji – ligger like sør for bygdelaget Sirma. Karene arbeidet fra en av de lange, smale elvebåtene som ble brukt i dette vassdraget. Aslak sto i akterenden av båten og holdt den i posisjon ved hjelp av en båtshake, mens Per satt i baugen med garn som skulle plasseres mellom staker som var drevet ned i elvebotnen. Denne fiskemåten ble praktisert i sommersesongen, på lavere vannstand og med roligere strømforhold enn under vårflommen i elva. Fotografiet er tatt på St. Hansaften i 1975.
Dette fotografiet tok konservator Åsmund Eknæs ved Norsk Skogmuseum da han sommeren 1975 var i Finnmark for å samle informasjon og gjøre opptak til filmen "Laksefiske i Nord-Norge" sammen med filmfotografen Kyrre Grepp. I filmen var det opptak fra Tana og Neiden som ble brukt, men Eknæs utførte også annet dokumentasjonsarbeid og samlet en del gjenstander til museet når han likevel var i den nordligste delen av landet.
