Glennetangen lense ble bygd etter et vedtak som ble gjort av styret i det nyetablerte Glomma fellesfløtingsforening i 1936, like etter sammenslutningen av Christiania Tømmerdirektion og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion. Vedtaket ble gjort fordi ledelsen i den nye organisasjonen var smertelig klar over at effektiviteten ved Nes lense, som hadde vært i drift siden 1908, og som lå noen kilometer høyere oppe i elva, aldri kunne bli helt optimal. Ved Nes var det problemer med strøm, og i perioder også med vind. Reguleringstiltakene som fulgte stadig flere kraftverksdammer i nedre Glomma førte dessuten til at fløtingsarbeidet i denne delen av Glomma måtte forseres i perioder da kraftverkene så seg råd til å slippe mye vann forbi dammene, noe som skapte kapasitetsproblemer ved Nes-lensa. Undersøkelser hadde vist at både strøm- og vindforhold var bedre på strekningen Glennetangen – Finnskott. Flyttinga av et slikt stort lenseanlegg var imidlertid en kostbar affære, som tømmerkjøperne ikke torde gi seg i kast med før de to gamle fellesfløtingsforeningene i vassdraget var slått sammen til én. Vedtaket om å bygge et nyanlegg ble altså gjort i 1936. Arbeidet med å bygge den nye lensa ved Glennetangen begynte året etter, og anlegget sto ferdig til bruk i 1938. Glennetangen lense gjennomgikk en større ombygging tidlig i 1960-åra, og anlegget var i bruk inntil fløtinga i vassdraget ble avviklet i midten av 1980-åra. Mot slutten var Borregaard fabrikker den eneste bedriften som fikk tømmer via vassdraget, så da ble det mindre sorteringsarbeid, men naturligvis mye sopping (bunting) med sikte på tømmersleping i det østre elveløpet. Lenseanlegget på Glennetangen fikk ei kraftig oppsamlings- eller beholdningslense, som startet ved Lystadtangen i Skiptvet på vestsida og ved Finnskott i Rakkestad på østsida. Nederst i beholdningslensa ble tømmeret sluppet inn i sorteringslensa gjennom to såkalte ”søkker”. Nedenfor ble det fordelt på fem avdelinger, som endte i hver sin mosemaskin. På vegen mot disse maskinene ble tømmeret sortert etter påslåtte øksemerker i ”lommer”. Når disse var fulle ble virke fra samme lomme (med samme merke) ble sluppet samlet ned til mosing. Før ombygginga tidlig i 1960-åra var sorteringsanlegget om lag 2 000 meter langt og hadde 120 båser. Etterpå ble anlegget forkortet til cirka 1 100 meter og antallet båser ble redusert til 42. Denne endringa speilte både strukturelle endringer i tømmermarkedet (færre, men større bedrifter kjøpte tømmeret) og i den tilgjengelige teknologien.

Både retteanlegget som skulle bidra til at tømmerstokkene ble liggende parallelt, vaiertrekket som ledet dem ned mot mosekamrene og mosemaskinene ble drevet av elektromotorer. Videre skimter vi «renna», der tømmer fra retteanlegget høyere oppe ble ført mellom solide flåteganger mot mosemaskinen, som befant seg like til høyre for dette bildeutsnittet. Med til anlegget hørte flere bygninger som fløt på pongtonger inntil rennene. Vi ser ei mannskapsbrakke, samt ei formannsbrakke og ei tellerbu (med pulttak). Langsmed lenseanlegget er det rammet påler ned i elvebotnen som bærer telegrafstolper. Lenseanlegget hadde behov for store mengder elektrisk energi, både til ulike motorer og til belysning i forbindelse med kveldsarbeid utover høsten. På hitsida var lensa var det fortøyd en varpebåt da fotografiet ble tatt, på motsatt side skimter vi slepebåten «Per», som tidligere hadde operert i det vestre elveløpet ved Trøsken og nedover mot tømmertunnelen til Eidet. I bakgrunnen ser vi mot Skiptvet til venstre og mot Varteig og Rakkestad på høyre side.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glomma. Derfor fikk historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som ble ansatt som amanuensis ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1984, dokumentasjon av denne virksomheten som en av sine primæroppgaver. Vestheim gjorde mange reiser langs vassdraget, der han snakket med fløtere og dokumenterte ved hjelp av notatblokk og diktafon. Han hadde også med seg museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad på flere av turene. Vestheims dokumentasjonsarbeid dreide seg også om de materielle levningene etter fløtingsvirksomheten som snart skulle opphøre. Han ble blant annet sentral i første fase av bevaringa av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiver ved Fetsund lenser. Arkivet ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det ligge på Fetsund, hvor Vestheim sammen med lokale engasjementsmedarbeidere foretok en første ordning. Den daglige forvaltningen av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv er seinere overlatt til fløtermuseet ved Fetsund lenser. I 1985 omtalte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum Vestheims arbeid som «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette siste driftsåret til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening dokumenterte Vestheim og Ljøstad fløting i Åmot i Østerdalen, ved Norsfossen i Solør, ved Bingen og på Øyeren i Akershus, og ved Sleppetangen, Solbergfoss, Vamma, Glennetangen og Eidet i Østfold. For å få gode oversiktsbilder av lensesystemer og tømmersleping leide museet fly. Sluttproduktet fra Vestheims arbeid med Glomma-fløtinga ble boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», som ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
