Fetsund ble lensested for tømmer fra den øvre delen av Glommavassdraget i 1861. Før den tid lå lenseanlegget ved Bingen, noen få kilometer høyere opp i vassdraget. Der ble løstømmer som kom flytende på det rennende vannet stanset mot et flytende stengsel av sammenkjedete tømmerstokker som ble støttet mot pæler og steinfylte tømmerkister. Alle stokkene var merket med påslåtte økseprofiler, symboler som fortalte hvem som hadde kjøpt hver enkelt stokk. Ved Bingen, og seinere ved Fetsund, skilte lensearbeiderne det tømmeret som skulle til kjøpere på Nedre Romerike eller i hovedstadsområdet fra det som skulle videre i retning Sarpsborg og Fredrikstad. Herfra måtte tømmeret samles i større enheter («flaker», «bommer» eller «sopper») før det kunne fløtes videre i retning sagbruk og trefordelingsbedrifter i nærområdet eller over den over 3 mil lange innsjøen Øyeren.
Flyttinga av «storlensa» fra Bingen til Fetsund må ses i sammenheng med andre ting prosjekter som ble realisert i dette området på samme tid. Øyeren er en stor, men grunn innsjø der vannstanden fra gammelt av svingte kraftig med vannføringa i Glommavassdraget. I store flomår kunne forskjellen mellom høyeste og laveste vannstand være opptil 12-13 meter, og i ekstremåret 1789 skal vannspeilet ha stått hele 17 meter over laveste registrerte nivå. Flommene var et problem for jordbrukerne, særlig ved den nordvestre enden av innsjøen, der lendet var flatt, slik at åker- og engarealer ofte ble oversvømt. Her var flommene også et problem fordi de satte veger under vann og gjorde det vanskelig å finne en trygg jernbanetrasé. I 1850-åra utredet myndighetene mulighetene for å regulere innsjøen, både med sikte på å spare bøndene for flommene og å kunne bygge jernbane mot Kongsvinger og Sverige. Utrederne mente at det kunne være mulig å senke høyeste flomvannstand 3,5 meter og å heve laveste høstvannstand 2,35 meter ved å utvide elveløpet ved Mørkfossen øverst i Nedre Glomma og deretter bygge en såkalt fermettedam ved denne fossen. Dette nesten 140 meter brede damanlegget sto ferdig i 1862. Samme år ble Kongsvingerbanen, som krysset Glomma på ei bru ved Fetsund, åpnet. Avstanden mellom steinkarene som bar denne brua skal ha vært hovedårsaken til at det ble bygd nye sorteringslenser for tømmer ved Fetsund. Lensestedet ved Bingen ble beholdt som beholdningsreservoar, et flytende tømmerlager som ble tappet porsjonsvis i «ladninger» med tømmerkvanta som det var realistisk at mannskapene ved sorteringslensene ved Fetsund skulle kunne greie å ekspedere i løpet av kommende døgn.
Det første fløtingsanlegget ved Fetsund ble bygd for Christiania Tømmerdirektion under ledelse av fløtingsinspektøren ved Bingen, Gunerius Soot, og hans assistent Hans Olaves Nielsen. Ei sorteringslense langs den vestre elvebredden sto klar til bruk sommeren 1861. Fire år seinere fikk Tømmerdirektionen ferdigstilt et lenseanlegg også på den østre sida av elva. I 1868 ble anleggene i vann komplettert ved at det ble etablert et opplagssted for flytende tømmer på Vestvollen, ved Svellet, der vann fra Glomma møter vann fra Nitelva og Lillestrøm. I mellomtida ble det også bygd kontorer og bolig for fløtingsinspektøren på Lund, på vestsida av elva, og boligbrakke for noen av arbeiderfamiliene tett inntil lenseanlegget.
På midten av 1800-tallet var det drøyt 100 sagbruk på Nedre Romerike. De lå på steder der det var mulig å hente energi fra fossefall. Mange lå ved Sagelva, som renner nordover fra Fjellhamar mot Nitelva ved Lillestrøm, men det fantes også sagbruk ved andre sideelver i regionen. En del av fløtingstømmeret på Glomma gikk til disse brukene. Det øvrige ble buksert over Øyeren. Transporten av tømmer og skurlast, til lands og til vanns, gav hardt tilkjempete inntekter til en stor del av befolkningen i området. Bukseringa av tømmer sørover Øyeren ble effektivisert da hjuldamperen «Kong Hakon» ble satt i drift i 1849. Den dro løstømmer i ringbommer sørover mot Sleppetangen ved Nedre Glommas utløp fra innsjøen. Etter jernbaneutbygginga (Hovedbanen Oslo-Eidsvoll fra 1854 og den nevnte Kongsvingerbanen fra 1862) skjedde mesteparten av trelasttransporten med tog. Også noe av rundlasten ble tatt opp fra slusene ved Fetsund og lastet på tog til nye sagbruk som etter sagbruksprivilegiene ble opphevet i 1860 grodde fram på steder uten fossefall, men med jernbaneforbindelse og nærhet til utskipingshavn. Mesteparten av tømmeret, også det som skulle til de mange nye dampsagene på Lillestrøm, ble fortsatt transportert på vann. I begynnelsen av 1860-åra kom det nok en dampbåt som bukserte tømmer i denne regionen, D/S Øieren.
Med den papirproduserende treforedlingsindustrien som ble etablert på 1800-tallet ble det stadig flere, men grannere tømmerstokker. Samtidig økte antallet kjøpere av fløtingsvirke fra Glommavassdraget. Denne utviklinga gjorde det nødvendig å bygge ut kapasiteten og utvikle driftsteknologien ved Fetsund lenser. Richard Christensen Furuholmen, som bestyrte et lenseanlegg i Nedre Glomma, utviklet noe som på Fetsund ble kalt en «soppemaskin», en flytende innretning som kunne bunte tømmeret i flere kryssende lag, en ganske kompakt enhet som ble kalt «soppe». Soppene var langt mer robuste under sleping i vind enn ringbommene hadde vært. Tidlig på 1900-tallet konstruerte en annen lensemann, Arnt Svaredal, en mosemaskin som buntet stokkene parallelt, omsluttet av jernvaiere, såkalte «grimer». Fra 1905 var det slutt med ringbomfløting på Øyeren. Mosemaskinene ble montert nederst i lensekompleksene, i enden av lange, 4-5 meter brede «renner» eller «kanaler» der tømmeret kom langsomt flytende. I den travle perioden tidlig på 1900-tallet var det fire «sjunker» – tømmersorteringsstasjoner – ved den vestre elvebredden og to på østsida av elva ved Fetsund. Mesteparten av tømmeret skulle til industrien ved nederst i vassdraget, i Sarpsborg- og Fredrikstad-regionen. Dette «Øyer-tømmeret» ble soppet sams, for det skulle løsfløtes videre når det nådde Nedre Glommas utløp fra Øyeren. «Strøm-tømmeret», som hadde merker som viste at de skulle til et av sagbrukene i nærområdet, til Fladeby eller Lillestrøms cellulosefabrikker, ble samlet i sidelommer og «soppet» manuelt, «merke for merke» og slept til bedriftenes tømmerinntak (kjerrater).
Etter det store krakket som rammet skogbruket og skogindustrien i 1921 krympet fløtingskvantumet i Glomma. Lavkonjunkturen ble langvarig, og i 1930-åra innså fløtingsdirektør Johs. Johannesen at lenseanlegget måtte bygges om og gis en mer kostnadseffektiv drift. I 1937-38 ble de seks sjunkene erstattet av to større anlegg, Lundslensa ved vestre elvebredd og Prestlensa på østsida. Begge hadde to mosemaskiner. Etter 2. verdenskrig steg tømmerprisene og fløtingskvantumet igjen. I slutten av 1950-åra ble lensene nok en gang ombygd, denne gangen for å spare den manuelle arbeidsinnsatsen som måtte til når Strøm-tømmeret ble dratt motstrøms inn i et «soppelag» for finsortering.
Utover i 1960-åra begynte de som hadde lenseanlegget på Fetsund som arbeidsplass å merke at stadig mer av tømmertransporten ble overført til jernbanen og lastebileierne. Driften av Prestlensa ved østre elvebredd ble avviklet etter 1965-sesongen. Samtidig skrantet den lokale skogindustrien. Følgelig ble det stadig mindre Strøm-tømmer. Følgelig ble også virksomheten ved opplagsanlegget ved Vestvollen avviklet. Fra 1972 var det bare storbedriften Borregaard i Sarpsborg som fikk fløtet tømmeret sitt i Glomma. Dette innebar at tømmersorteringa ved Fetsund lenser opphørte. Soppinga og slepinga av sopper sørover mot Sleppetangen fortsatte, nå med slepebåten Mørkfos som trekkraft. Det gikk 160-200 sopper – 80-100 000 slipstokker i hvert slikt slep. Ei slepevending tok 12-18 timer.
I de mest aktive åra skal det ha vært oppimot 300 arbeidere knyttet til lenseanlegget på Fetsund. De aller fleste av dem var sesongansatte med arbeid og inntekt fra lensene bare i sommerhalvåret. Antallet slike arbeidsfolk krympet noe etter de nevnte ombyggingene av lenseanlegget. Etter den nevnte nedleggelsen av Prestlensa (1965) kunne for eksempel arbeidsstyrken reduseres fra 118 til 60 mann. Et mekanisk retteanlegg og vaiertrekk som dro stokkene parallelt mot mosemaskinene fra slutten av dette tiåret muliggjorde ei halvering av den gjenværende arbeidsstokken. Likevel ble det stadig vanskeligere å rekruttere lokale folk til sesongarbeid. Dette ble løst ved å engasjere karer som drev i skogen i vinterstid og som ved å arbeide ved Fetsund lenser i sommersesongen fikk sysselsetting året rundt.
I februar 1984 meldte Borregaard Industries Limited at de tok sikte på å fortsette avvikle sin fløtingsaktivitet i Glomma ved utgangen av 1985-sesongen. Trompetisten Harry Kvebæk, som hadde vokst opp i lensemiljøet, hadde sett denne utviklinga komme og insisterte på at anlegget måtte bevares som kulturminne. Ideen ble forelagt så vel fløtingsledelsen som offentlige instanser på forskjellige administrative nivåer. Etter at nedleggelsen var en realitet – da Glomma fellesfløtingsforening i henhold til vassdragsloven skulle fjerne alle fløtingsinstallasjoner fra vassdraget – kom det et midlertidig fredningsvedtak. Denne beslutningen ble stadfestet i 1989, og året etter ble Fetsund lensemuseum åpnet. Museet ble tidlig et av de teknisk-industrielle kulturminnene som mottok vedlikeholds- og driftsstøtte fra Riksantikvaren. Museet har vært drevet sammen med Nordre Øyeren naturinformasjonssenter, etter hvert med det Akershusmuseet som administrativ overbygning.

Ved denne brua kunne renna «penses» sidelengs, slik at tømmeret vekselvis ble ført mot den en og den andre av de to soppemaskinene ved anlegget. Til venstre bak fløteren ser vi et stativ med en bryterboks, der det var knapper som ble brukt til å manøvrere renna. Vi ser også hvordan brua bæres av kraftige stålpongtonger. Renna er omgitt av kraftige duc d’alber (pælekonstruksjoner, som lensearbeiderne på Fetsund kalte «gæljer» [galger]). I bakgrunnen Glommas vestbredd ved den nedre delen av lenseanlegget.
Den avbildete tekniske løsningen var et ledd i en større rasjonaliseringsprosess som preget siste halvdel av 1960-åra ved Fetsund lenser. Målet var å krympe bemanninga i en periode da kvantumet med fløtingstømmer var synkende, samtidig lønnskostnadene ble stadig mer trykkende og tilgangen på folk som var interesserte i det sesongarbeidet Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening kunne tilby ved lensene også ble stadig vanskeligere. Lenseanlegget på østsida av elva ble nedlagt etter 1965-sesongen, noe som reduserte arbeidsstokken fra 118 til cirka 60 mann. I åra som fulgte arbeidet man med å mekanisere retteanlegget, med vaiertrekk(jfr. SJF-F. 005218) og den nevnte «overkjøringa», som gjorde det enklere å fordele virket fra renna på de to gjenværende soppemaskinene. Etter disse endringene kunne bemanninga ute på lenseanlegget ved Fetsund krympes ned mot 30.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glomma. Derfor fikk historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som ble ansatt som amanuensis ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1984, dokumentasjon av denne virksomheten som en av sine primæroppgaver. Vestheim gjorde mange reiser langs vassdraget, der han snakket med fløtere og dokumenterte ved hjelp av notatblokk og diktafon. Han hadde også med seg museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad på flere av turene. Vestheims dokumentasjonsarbeid dreide seg også om de materielle levningene etter fløtingsvirksomheten som snart skulle opphøre. Han ble blant annet sentral i første fase av bevaringa av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiver ved Fetsund lenser. Arkivet ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det ligge på Fetsund, hvor Vestheim sammen med lokale engasjementsmedarbeidere foretok en første ordning. Den daglige forvaltningen av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv er seinere overlatt til fløtermuseet ved Fetsund lenser. I 1985 omtalte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum Vestheims arbeid som «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette siste driftsåret til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening dokumenterte Vestheim og Ljøstad fløting i Åmot i Østerdalen, ved Norsfossen i Solør, ved Bingen og på Øyeren i Akershus, og ved Sleppetangen, Solbergfoss, Vamma, Glennetangen og Eidet i Østfold. For å få gode oversiktsbilder av lensesystemer og tømmersleping leide museet fly. Sluttproduktet fra Vestheims arbeid med Glomma-fløtinga ble boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», som ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
