Norsk Skogbruksmuseum statet det som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma» ved inngangen til arbeidsåret 1984. Da var det klart at den tradisjonsrike tømmerfløtinga i vassdraget ville bli avviklet i 1985. Museet ønsket derfor å få i gang et dokumentasjonsprosjekt der tømmertransporten på vassdraget skulle ha hovedfokus. Historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som hadde arbeidet ved museet fra 1982, skulle ha hovedansvar for prosjektet. Han tok sikte på å samle et representativt utvalg av løse gjenstander fra fløtinga til museet, han ville dokumentere faste fløtingsinnretninger i vassdraget, ta vare på eldre fotografier og arkivalia, samt samle det han kalte «minne- og tradisjonsmateriale» med tilknytning til Glomma-fløtinga. Særlig museets fotograf, OT Ljøstad, var en trofast samarbeidspartner under arbeidet med prosjektet. Vestheim og Ljøstad reiste mye langs vassdraget i 1984 og 1985, men også i «oppryddingsfasen» i de par første sesongene etter dette. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot sitt fotoarkiv, som besto av 72 album en del negativmateriale fra ulike deler av vassdraget, til Norsk Skogmuseum. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i den murte delen av kontorkomplekset Fellesfløtingsforeningen hadde hatt på Fetsund. Der veiledet Øivind Vestheim en del lokale medarbeidere som ble engasjert for å ordne arkivet. Forvaltningen av arkivmaterialet ble etter 1990 overlatt til lensemuseet, som ble etablert på Fetsund dette året. Mange av gjenstandene Vestheim samlet inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med prosjektet ble dessverre kjørt direkte på fjernmagasin i Elverum, uten at de ble registrert. Dermed gikk dessverre informasjon om proveniens og bruk i stor utstrekning tapt. Heller ikke de fotografiske opptakene ble tilfredsstillende registrert da de var «ferske». Øivind Vestheim brukte en kassettopptaker som «feltdagbok» under mange av turene langs vassdraget. Bjørn Bækkelund skrev av mange av kassettene etter at han begynte ved museet høsten 1997. Innslagene av tradisjons- og minnemateriale på disse opptakene var få. Prosjekt Glomma skulle opprinnelig vare fra og med 1984 til og med 1988, altså i fem år. Det viste seg imidlertid at oppgavene ble mange, og at arbeidet tok lengre tid enn forutsatt. Øivind Vestheim avsluttet sin del av prosjektet med utgivelsen av boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer» i 1998. Han sluttet for øvrig ved museet like før boka var ferdig. I ettertid har nye medarbeidere ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gradvis forsøkt å gjøre noe med det registreringsmessige og forvaltningsmessige etterslepet etter Prosjekt Glomma.

Renna er omgitt av flåteganger, som var lagd av tømmerstokker som man hadde skåret yteveden av på tre sider, slik at de skulle bli rette og plane før de ble boltet sammen til lange, rektangulære flytelegemer som ble koplet sammen, ende mot ende. På den ene av dem ser vi en fløter, kledd i kortbukser, bøttehatt og joggesko. Dette er setskogingen Asbjørn Østby, som arbeidet ved lenseanlegget i mange sesonger. Ved hjelp av en fløterhake skyver han tømmeret i renna i retning av ei bru på tvers av renna. En annen fløter står på brua. Her kunne retningen på renna «penses» langsomt sidelengs ved hjelp av en elektrisk motor. Poenget med dette var at renna skulle forsyne to soppemaskiner med tømmer. Når renna ned mot den ene maskinen var full, ble den ovenforliggende renna forskjøvet sidelengs, mot renna som førte mot den andre soppemaskinen. Det er begynnelsen på denne prosessen, som lensearbeiderne på Fetsund kalte «overkjøringa», vi ser på dette fotografiet. Vi ser prosessen sluttført på SJF-F. 005221.
Denne tekniske løsningen var et ledd i en større rasjonaliseringsprosess som preget siste halvdel av 1960-åra ved Fetsund lenser. Målet var å krympe bemanninga i en periode da kvantumet med fløtingstømmer var synkende, samtidig lønnskostnadene ble stadig mer trykkende og tilgangen på folk som var interesserte i det sesongarbeidet Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening kunne tilby ved lensene også ble stadig vanskeligere. Lenseanlegget på østsida av elva ble nedlagt etter 1965-sesongen, noe som reduserte arbeidsstokken fra 118 til cirka 60 mann. I åra som fulgte arbeidet man med å mekanisere retteanlegget, med vaiertrekk(jfr. SJF-F. 005218) og den nevnte «overkjøringa», som gjorde det enklere å fordele virket fra renna på de to gjenværende soppemaskinene. Etter disse endringene kunne bemanninga ute på lenseanlegget ved Fetsund krympes ned mot 30.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glomma. Derfor fikk historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som ble ansatt som amanuensis ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1984, dokumentasjon av denne virksomheten som en av sine primæroppgaver. Vestheim gjorde mange reiser langs vassdraget, der han snakket med fløtere og dokumenterte ved hjelp av notatblokk og diktafon. Han hadde også med seg museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad på flere av turene. Vestheims dokumentasjonsarbeid dreide seg også om de materielle levningene etter fløtingsvirksomheten som snart skulle opphøre. Han ble blant annet sentral i første fase av bevaringa av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiver ved Fetsund lenser. Arkivet ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det ligge på Fetsund, hvor Vestheim sammen med lokale engasjementsmedarbeidere foretok en første ordning. Den daglige forvaltningen av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv er seinere overlatt til fløtermuseet ved Fetsund lenser. I 1985 omtalte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum Vestheims arbeid som «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette siste driftsåret til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening dokumenterte Vestheim og Ljøstad fløting i Åmot i Østerdalen, ved Norsfossen i Solør, ved Bingen og på Øyeren i Akershus, og ved Sleppetangen, Solbergfoss, Vamma, Glennetangen og Eidet i Østfold. For å få gode oversiktsbilder av lensesystemer og tømmersleping leide museet fly. Sluttproduktet fra Vestheims arbeid med Glomma-fløtinga ble boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», som ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
