Tofte Cellulosefabrik ble anlagt i slutten av 1890-åra på ei tomt i Hurum kommune der det bare var spredt bebyggelse. Her var det ikke tilgangen på arbeidskraft, men beliggenheten ved sjøen som var den viktigste lokaliseringsfaktkoren. Med stadig kraftigere dampdrevne slepebåter var det nemlig mulig å hente tømmer både fra Drammens- og Glommavassdragene hit uten store kostnader, og Tofte lå også gunstig til med havn for videresalg og distribusjon av den ferdigproduserte cellulosen, både til norske og utenlandske papirfabrikker. Etableringa av bedriften førte til at det vokste fram et lite tettsted på sletta nordøst for fabrikkanlegget, seinere også langs strendene sørvestover fra bedriften. Produksjonen ved Tofte Cellulosefabrik var sulfittbasert. Investorene var kjente navn fra norsk treforedlingsindustri, Thomas Cathinco Berg og Gustav Hartmann, samt representanter for familiene Kiøsterud og Kiær. Bedriften og produksjonen vokste, som ved mange tilsvarende anlegg tidlig på 1900-tallet. De første åra leverte fabrikken 8 000 tonn cellulose i året, ved utgangen av 1. verdenskrig var produksjonen kommet opp i 18 000 tonn. Etter krisetida omkring 1920 gikk det langsommere med videreutviklinga av virksomheten, men Tofte var blant de treforedlingsfabrikkene som forsøkte å effektivisere utnyttinga av de kjemiske ressursene i produksjonen ved å levere sulfittsprit. Under 2. verdenskrig ble anlegget også en betydelig leverandør av fôrcellulose. Fabrikken hadde i mange år svenske bestyrere, som ledet virksomheten ut fra paternalistiske holdninger, etter hvert i en viss konflikt med arbeidernes fagforeninger. Etter 2. verdenskrig kom det en periode med bedre muligheter for investeringer og ekspansjon. Dermed ble fabrikken utvidet, slik at den i 1960-åra kunne levere 90 000 tonn cellulose i året. I 1970, da man så de første tegnene til nedgangstider for den norske celluloseindustrien, begynte Union-konsernet å kjøpe seg inn i Tofte. Snart startet også Norske Skogindustrier, Saugbrugsforeningen og Follum fabrikker oppkjøp av Tofte-aksjer. I 1974 ble disse fire storaktørene i den norske skogindustrien enige om å satse på storproduksjon av cellulose på Tofte. Industrilederne mente nemlig at småprodusentenes tid var forbi, og at det måtte store enheter til for å møte den utenlandske konkurransen. Fagforeningene ville ha statlig eierskap. Staten ble ikke majoritetseier, men gikk inn med om lag en firedel av aksjekapitalen. De nye eierne investerte 1, 6 milliarder kroner i et nyanlegg, som ble satt i drift i 1980. «Nye Tofte» slet med å få solgt cellulosen fabrikken produserte, og virksomheten gikk med store underskudd. I 1982 ble det konkurs, og både den øvrige treforedlingsindustrien og staten tapte store summer. De statlige tapene førte til mye politisk strid. Virksomheten kom imidlertid i gang igjen med Norske Skog som hovedinvestor. Man investerte i ny produksjonsteknologi, og produksjonen økte fra om lag 100 000 tonn i året i 1980 til 400 000 tonn omkring årtusenskiftet. Bedriftens beliggenhet ved sjøen førte til at Tofte tidlig i langt større grad enn andre norske treforedlingsbedrifter baserte produksjonen på importert, kortfibret virke fra Sør-Europa, Afrika og Latin-Amerika. Fra år 2000 har det svenske skogeierkonsernet Södra eid cellulosefabrikken på Tofte, som dermed ble omdøpt til «Södra Cell Tofte».

Fotografiet er tatt fra et høydedrag som ble kalt Bispen over ei lita bukt, der fabrikkanlegget ligger innerst inne, på motsatt side av bukta. I forgrunnen ligger et toetasjes sveitserhus med tilhørende uthusbygninger. Fabrikkanlegget besto av flere bygninger, de fleste sannsynligvis utført i teglmur, og et par høye skorsteinspiper. Til venstre i bildet, cirka 100 meter fra cellulosefabrikken, ses et par andre bygninger med «industrielt utseende», samt et våningshus. Bakenfor de nevnte industrianleggene lå et belte med skog og et høydedrag med bare spredt trevegetasjon. Fotografiet er et vinteropptak med snødekt mark, men med åpen sjø.
