Den avbildete klengstua var i drift første gang vinteren 1926, da det ble klenget bortimot 40 hektoliter furukongler som var innsamlet sesongen 1924-25. I åra som fulgte fortsatte Salten Skogselskap å samle furukongler så fremt det var noenlunde konglesetting, og Jacob Nergård sørget for at konglene ble klenget. Da det viste seg å komme inn ganske mye kongler vinteren 1928 ble det bygd to nye hjeller i Sjomen klengstue. Frøutbyttet fra klenginga varierte, og var enkelte år skuffende ettersom Jacob Nergård og de andre ildsjelene i skogbruket i Salten hadde store forventninger når de så at furuskogen hadde forholdsvis store kongler. De lærte imidlertid at det slett ikke alltid var noe samsvar mellom gjennomsnittlig konglestørrelse og frøutbytte. Fra 1932 begynte Salten Skogselskap å sende kongleprøver til Skogforsøksvesenet, for å få testet spireevne før det ble tatt beslutning om konglesanking i større omfang. Etter klenging ble frøprøver fra Sjomen klengstue undersøkt ved Statens kontrollanstalt i Trondheim, stundom også spiringsforsøk i Rognan planteskole. I gode år viste testene en spireprosent på cirka 80, i dårlige år ned mot 20. Det var i hovedsak furukongler som ble klenget i Sjomen, men i 1931 ble det også, som et forsøk, samlet en del grankongler fra plantefelt som da var blitt gamle nok til at de var konglebærende. Den store utfordringa ved skogfrøproduksjonen så langt nord i Norge var sommerklimaet, som bare unntaksvis var stabilt og varmt nok til at frøet ble tilstrekkelig modent. I andre halvdel av 1930-åra var det imidlertid flere gode somrer etter hverandre i Nord-Norge, noe som gav muligheter for en ganske betydelig frøproduksjon, også ved Sjomen klengstue. I denne perioden ble det også mottatt konglepartier fra Lyngen skogforvaltning, Aust-Finnmark skogforvaltning og Finnmark skogselskap til leieklenging, i tillegg til det som ble innsamlet i Salten skogselskaps distrikt. I samband med den gode tilgangen på klengingsoppdrag ble det i 1938 satt inn en tredje kongletrommel i Sjomen klengstue. Dessverre gikk mye av det gode furufrøet fra Troms i denne perioden tapt. Det ble nemlig sendt til Bodø for lagring, og lageret der ble rammet av bomber i 1940. Etter dette ble både produksjon og lagring av skogfrø fra Salten mer og mer overlatt til Hamar statskleng/Statens skogfrøverk, som i slutten av 1930-åra var blitt modernisert med sikte på å kunne fungere som hoverdanlegg for skogfrøproduksjonen i Norge.
SubjectSalten Skogselskaps klengstue på Elvegård i Skjomen i Ofoten, fotografert våren 1926, da anlegget var nytt. Bygningen besto av en noenlunde kvadratisk laftet kjerne, som tydeligvis hadde en fortid som en annen type bygning. Sentralt på gavlveggen var det et lite vindu, og vi ser også spor etter en eldre, gjentømret vindusåpning, som ikke var fullt så sentrert på veggflata. I den enden av bygningen som lå lengst fra fotografen var tilbygd et vinduløst rom i bordkledd bindingsverk, antakelig et oppbevaringsrom for konglesekker som skulle klenges og kanskje for ferdigklenget frø. Hele bygningen hadde nylagt torvtak. Opp fra mønet stakk det et jernrør, sannsynligvis røykavløpet fra ovnen som varmet opp klengstua. Foran bygningens langvegg står en mann med mørke vadmelsbukser, busserull og sixpencelue. Han hadde en diger kvit pose, antakelig med ferdigklenget frø, i hver hand. Mannen er Jacob Nergård (f. 1863) gardbruker på Elvegård og Elvemork, og skogvokter eller skogbetjent i statsskogene i Ofoten (Tromsø skogforvaltning) fra 1888. Han var også bestyrer ved den avbildete klengstua, en oppgave han skjøttet på en samvittighetsfull og dyktig måte. I 1928 fikk han Salten Skogselskaps diplom for sitt engasjerte virke for innsamling av kongler og klenging av skogfrø fra selskapets distrikt.

Fotografiet er registrert med utgangspunkt i en kopi som ble funnet i Norsk Skogmuseums tematisk inndelte arkiv for fotografier (kopier) under rubrikken "102. 0101 Frø [skogfrøverk, klenging]. En innskrift på baksida av kopien tyder på at den en gang har tilhørt Salten Skogselskap.
