- Den 30. september 1917 stengde Hotel Hardanger etter sin siste sesong, og den 15. oktober 1917 overtok kommunen den nye eigedomen sin, som han hadde overtatt slik den stod for kr. 700000 pluss kr. 50000 for innbu og lausøyre. Innflyttinga tok til litt etter kvart. Utvendig vart det teke ei sanering i 1927, då tårn, verandaer og altaner vart nedrivne. Samstundes fekk bygget ein rustraud farge som skulle løyna skiten betre enn den ljosgule. Seinare fekk rådhuset den grågule fargen att. Etter at nye Odda rådhus vart bygd og stod ferdig i 1957, gjekk utflytting og forfall på det gamle rådhuset hand i hand fram til 1974. Sjøfløyen vart riven i 1973, og dermed var den imponerande fasaden ut mot sjøen vekk, bygget framstod som noko amputert. Dårleg vedlikehald og behandling av Hardanger Sunnhordlandske Dampskipsselskap (HSD) og siste brukar Odda Rutebuss gjorde at bygget forfalt, og stemninga for riving vokste. Den 8. november 1976 tok dei til med rivinga av rådhuset og i juni 1977 var det berre ein grushaug att av det som ein gong var det flottaste hotellet i Norge.
