Odda sjukehus under bygging. Odda fekk status som eigen kommune i 1913, og saka om anskaffing av eit nytt sjukehus blei prioritert av det nye kommunestyret. I mars 1914 blei det sett ned ein sjukehuskomité, som la fram si innstilling i juli 1915. Same året kom den spesialutdanna kirurgen dr. Haavik til Odda. Han var svært engasjert i arbeidet med å få bygd sjukehuset, og i 1918 blei det endeleg realisert. Byggekostnadane var på litt over 300 000 kr. og sjukehuset stod klart til innflytting hausten 1918, tidsmessig utstyrt. Eit røntgenapparat kom ikkje på plass før i juni 1928. Prisen på dette var kr. 17 701,81 og blei betalt av de tre bedriftene og AS Tyssefaldene i fellesskap. Dr. Haavik blei tilsatt som sjukehuslege og direktør. Sjukehuset var bygd for 28 pasientar, til naud 35 om ein sette inn ekstrasenger. Døgnprisen for pasientar var kr. 6,- for dei som budde i kommunen, og kr. 10,- for alle andre. Betjeninga var i tillegg til dr. Haavik, ei oversøster som og var operasjonssøster, tre sjukesøstre, ei jordmor, to avdelingsjenter, ein kjøkkensjef og to kjøkkenjenter, ei jenta i vaskeriet, og ein vaktmester.
Det var ikkje definert ein klar skilnad mellom avdelingane kirurgisk, medisinsk og føden. Pasientane blei plasserte etter legen si tilvising, der det var ledig sengeplass, og der dr. Haavik meinte det var hensiktsmessig ved innleggingstidspunktet.
