Grunnarbeidet på kraftstasjonen starta i 1906 og første byggetrinn blei ferdig teikna og bygd i 1907. Ein kraftstasjon måtte innehalda bestemte delar som fundamentering, maskinsal, vindaugsrekker og belysning, traverskran, hovedport, apparatdel eller instrumentering og kontrollrom eller ”brett”. Det første stasjonsbygget var 50 meter langt, under 1/3 av det vi ser i dag og hadde plass til 6, seinare 7 aggregat på til saman 28.700 kVA. Dette vart kalla småavdelinga, og var levert av Escher Wyss i Sveits. Dei vart ombygde noko i 1954-55.
Allereie i 1910-12 vart stasjonen utvida med 2 aggregat på til saman 24.000 kVA. Desse generatorane var leverte av Siemens` Schuckert Werke i Tyskland. Det tredje byggetrinnet var frå 1912 til 1913 og omfatta 2 aggregat på til saman 24.000 kVA, leverte frå The British Westinghouse. Det fjerde byggetrinnet frå 1914 til 1917 omfatta 3 aggregat på til saman 40.000 kVA. Eitt blei levert av Westinghouse og dei andre av Siemens Schuckert. Desse store maskinene vart kalla storavdelinga. Etter røyrbrotet i 1916 vart røyr nr. 5 forsterka med bandasjeringar av stål. Femte byggetrinn var ferdigstillinga av Ringedalsdammen i 1910-1918, og dermed var AS Tyssefaldene si pionertid over. Det var altså fem byggetrinn før eitt av dei største og mest vellukka vasskraftprosjekt i norsk historie stod ferdig. Kraftstasjonen hadde då 15 aggregat, og hadde kosta om lag 13 mill. kr.
