John Bergqvist etablerade sig som fotograf i Linköping från april 1901. Han inflyttade med sin familj från Filipstad där han drivit egen fotorörelse sedan 1896. I Linköping övertog han den i staden så välkände fotografen Peter Johansson Berghs ateljé på Borgmästaregatan 3. Ateljén hade emellertid före Bergqvists ankomst en kort tid drivits av gotländskan Anna Sofia Nilsson (1864-1951).
Bergqvist nådde fort framgång i sin yrkesutövning och startade filialer i både hemstaden Filipstad och i Malmslätt strax utanför Linköping. Vid sidan av fotograferingen var han även en pionjär inom filmen. Redan 1905 startade han Linköpings första biograf, Elektra, och började producera film för den egna salongen och för andra biografägare. Han förvärvade rättigheterna till färgfilmssystemet Kinemacolor och hade sverigepremier för färgfilm i sin biograf i Linköping under stor uppståndelse.
År 1907 utvidgade han sin rörelse med ett filmlaboratorium i det nyuppförda Centralpalatset invid Stora torget. Lokalen kom även att fungera som fotoateljé. Bergqvist fortsatte under några år att arbeta parallellt med foto och film. År 1915 valde han dock sida och flyttade till Stockholm för en fortsatt karriär inom filmen. Ateljén på Borgmästaregatan 3 kom närmast att övertas av Karl Larsson (1873-1947), medan atelje´n i Centralpalatset kom att drivas av John Bergqvists assistent från filipstadstiden, Josef Röding (1877-1947).
