Birger Ljungström erhöll sitt första patent 1892, på en frihjulsmekanism för cyklar. Från 1903 arbetade han vid Separatorbolaget i Stockholm. Tillsammans med sin bror Fredrik Ljungström utvecklade han från 1908 ångturbinmotorer. Samma år startas AB Ljungströms ångturbin. Den svenska tillverkningen sker från 1913 i bolaget Svenska turbinfabriks AB Ljungström (STAL). Bröderna lämnade bolaget 1916 då det såldes att bli dotterbolag till ASEA.
