Daguerreotypiet er den første formen for fotografi. Teknikken ble oppfunnet av Joseph Niepce og Louis Daguerre, og ble kunngjort av det franske vitenskapsakademi i 1839.
Prosessen starter ved å blankpusse en forsølvet kobberplate og dampe den i jod. Da blir overflaten lyssensitiv og klar for eksponering i et kamera. Bildet fremkalles i kvikksølvdamp før det fikseres og deretter rammes inn bak en forseglet glassplate (bl.a. for å hindre oksidering i platens overflate, og dermed bremse nedbrytningen av selve motivet, reg.anm.).
Bildet er et speilvendt negativ som vises positivt i en svært blank overflate. Platen kan ikke kopieres; det finnes bare én versjon av hvert daguerreotypi.
