Gjest Baardsen var en av de mest omtalte norske forbrytere på 1800-tallet. Hans største bragd var å dikte seg selv. I boka "Levnetsløb" skapte han sin egen myte. Boka ble en av de store norske bestselgerne gjennom tidene. I sin egen fortelling er Baardsen mestertyv og kvinnekjær gentleman som ingen lenker kan holde. Det meste er løgn og diktning.
Baardesen pågripes 15. mai 1824 og settes i rådstuearresten i Bergen. Mens spesialbestilte jern smies, bevoktes han døgnet rundt av en vakt med fire mann på hvert skift. Bårdsen overføres til Bergenshus 23. juni 1824. Han klarer å rømme derfra året etter, men er på frifot i kun fire døgn.
