- Hjertesprette har vært i bruk over store deler av Norge, i Ryfylke og på Jæren. Hjertesprettene ble produsert av sølvsmedene i byene og solgt til folk på bygdene, men bondesølvsmedene kopierte også hjertesprettene. Hjertespretten er en utenlandsk mote som norske sølvsmeder tok med seg hjem. Ulike varianter av denne typen sprette finner vi i Sverige, Finland , Østerrike, Tyskland og England. Det er store likheter mellom norske og engelske hjertesøljer og det antas derfor at hjertespretten har kommet hit fra England. Moten med hjertesprette stammer fra middelalderen er et symbol fra den katolske symbolikken. Hjertet symboliserer kjærlighet. Hjertespenna var for forlove og gifte kvinner. og den er en mellomaldersølje som har sitt utspring kirkelig kunst og tenkemåte.
