En "tadkut", en vekepusser, brukes til å passe ilden når lampa i igloen er tent slik at den brenner jevnt, passe mye og hele tiden er i kontakt med fettet/oljen som er brennstoffet. De kommer i ulike størrelser og varierte materialer, men stein er vanlig.
Peder Ristvedt ble født på gården Nedre Ristvedt i Sandsvær 20. mars 1873. I 1901 ble han med Roald Amundsen på en prøvetur med jakten Gjøa til Nordøst-Grønland. I årene 1903-1906 var han med på den store Gjøa-ekspedisjonen gjennom Nordvestpassasjen som maskinist, smed, meteorolog og med ansvar for hundene. 16. juni 1903 la Gjøa og mannskapet fra kai i Oslo. Etter tre måneder til havs etablerte de i september 1903 leir på et sted de kalte Gjøahavn på King Williams land i Canada. Her ble de værende i nesten to år. I Gjøahavn fikk de kontakt med netsilik-inuittene og byttet til seg en hel del klær og andre gjenstander som delvis ble brukt på stedet og en hel del ble tatt med hjem til Norge. I 1905 reiste de videre til Kings Point ved Herscheløya på Alaskas nordkyst. Her har de trolig også byttet til seg gjenstander fra de innfødte inuittene. 31. august 1906 kom ekspedisjonen fram til gullgraverbyen Nome. Reisen videre til San Fransisco og videre til Norge, ble en triumfferd for Amundsen og mannskapet.
