Bruk
De er lange og tas på rundt livet omtrent på samme måte som man setter en strikk rundt en boks flere ganger. Kvinnene i Lusaka bruker kjeder i mange farger, men alle kvinner må ha ett hvitt kjede. I både Chisungu og Uwinga ritualet får novisen og bruden perlekjeder til å bære rundt livet. Det definerer dem som kjønnsmodne og kvinner. Perlekjeder er for eksempel en viktig del av mange av de prøvelsene, sketsjene og dansene som en novise må lære seg i seklusjonshytten og ritualene i skogen. Hver gang hun lykkes i en prøvelse, sier hun: Nandi kakula natoole lamba: «Når det gjelder meg, så har jeg vokst; jeg har nettopp plukket perlene». Dersom hun ikke lykkes, sier hun: Nandi kashi nafilwa lamba: “Når det gjelder meg, så er jeg ei jente; jeg har ikke klart å plukke perlene». I bryllupet har de en svært erotisk betydning; det vekker begjær hos både bruden og brudgommen. I bryllupskonteksten bruker de stort sett perlekjeder i fargene sort, hvitt og rødt da dette har bestemte betydninger: Dersom en kone legger et rødt kjede i ektesengen, er det et budskap til ektemannen om at hun menstruerer og derfor ikke kan ha samleie. Legger hun et hvitt kjede på sengen, betyr det at hun sluttet å menstruere for to dager siden, og de kan nå gjenoppta samleie. Legger hun en svart kjede på sengen, betyr at det det nå er på tide å fjerne kjønnshår.- Afrika Sørlige Afrika Zambia Lusaka Lusaka
Produksjon
Perlene importeres i dag fra India og særlig Kina og er laget av plast. De kommer i mange farger, og kvinnene i Lusaka lager kjeder i mange farger.- Afrika Sørlige Afrika Zambia Lusaka Lusaka

Kjedene var en gave fra en av mine forskningsassistenter, Joyce Chuba (Tumbuka) til Rosa. Rosa synes de er fine, men vil neppe bruke dem nå (hun skulle gjerne brukt dem når hun var litt yngre, sier hun). Hun vil derfor donere dem til museet. Joyce vet dette.- mottokSimonsen, Jan Ketil, PhD

Etnografika fra Zambia samlet inn og dokumentert av sosialantropolog Jan Ketil Simonsen, Sosialantropologisk institutt, NTNU. Keramiske krukker og perler er viktige parafernalier i mange rituelle komplekser som forfedrekulter, jaktritualer, og livs-syklusritualer.
