Funnene har fremkommet ved arkeologisk utgravning utført av Kulturhistorisk museum i tidsrommet 18. september – 3. november 2017, som følge av videreutvikling av Eg sykehus. Det ble anlagt 16 sjakter over lokaliteten for å avklare eventuelle funnkonsentrasjoner, hvorpå matjorden ble fjernet innenfor fire felt med et samlet areal på om lag 2950 m2.
På det nordlige feltet fremkom tre fotgrøfter, hvorav én med en forholdsvis godt bevart båtgrav. Graven er av en type som i generelt tidfestes til sen merovingertid–vikingtid (ca. 700–1000 e.Kr.). I tillegg ble det undersøkt rester av en plyndret, udatert sentralgrav. På den sørvestlige delen av området fremkom rester av et gårdsanlegg fra yngre romertid (ca. 200–400 e.Kr.) med et treskipet langhus, en firestolperskonstruksjon. Det fremkom også flere andre stolpehull, staurhull, kokegroper og nedgravninger som har blitt C14-datert til tidsrommet fra 400 f.Kr. til 650 e.Kr. På det østlige feltet ble funnet et dyrkningslag som er C14-datert til førromersk jernalder (ca. 500–1 f.Kr.), og mellom gårdsanlegget og det østlige feltet fremkom en nedgravning datert til senneolitikum (ca. 2300–1700 f.Kr.). Innenfor utgravningsområdet har det tidligere også ligget et jernproduksjonsområde (del av id 23360, katalogisert under museumsnummer C34910) som ble undersøkt i 1977. Som et ledd i undersøkelsene fra 2017 ble det også tidfestet tre kullprøver fra denne tidligere undersøkelsen. De nye ovnsdateringene har gitt en mer presis tidfesting av ovnene og knytter jernproduksjonen til gårdsanlegget fra yngre romertid.
Jernfunnene (unr. 1-15) utgjør et representativt utvalg av til sammen 273 nagler (hovedsakelig saum), 22 spiker og 7 fragmenter av jern, der det øvrige materialet ikke er katalogisert eller magasinert. Det henvises til utgravningsrapporten og digital dokumentasjon for oversikt over materialet.
Trekull fra ti prøver ble vedartbestemt ved Moesgaard Museum. Miljöarkeologiska laboratoriet, Umeå Universitet, gjennomførte makrofossilanalyser av 21 makrofossilprøver og jordkjemiske analyser av to serier på hhv. 268 og 102 jordprøver prøver. Det ble utført radiologisk datering av 19 prøver, dels trekull og dels makrofossiler, ved Laboratoriet för 14C-datering ved Lunds Universitet. To mikromorfologiske prøver ble analysert av Richard Macphail, University College London. Et utvalg av brente bein fra grav- og huskontekster ble osteologisk analysert av Arkeologerna, Statens historiska museer, avd. Lund. Jordprøver og mikromorfprøver ble i sin helhet forbrukt ved analyse. Deler av trekull og makrofossiler er likeledes forbrukt ved analyse.
