I forbindelse med utbyggingen av Regionfelt Østlandet foretok Universitetets kulturhistoriske museer (UKM), Gråfjellprosjektet, i perioden 10.6. - 29.8.2003 arkeologisk utgravning av deler av en setervoll, Deset Østseter/Melgårdseter, Gråfjell i Åmot kommune, Hedmark. Området ble registrert av NIKU i 2000 og 2001. Det er også utført pollenanalyser i området i regi av NIKU. Deset Østseter består av to seteranlegg som ligger på hver sin side av elva Deia; Melgårdseter på vestsiden og Søgårdsvollen på østsiden. Setervollen på Melgårdseter er noe kupert, og har slik den fremstår i dag, minst tre flate voller som skiller seg ut som potensielle for tidligere bosetting. På to av disse vollene står det bygninger i dag. Det er for det meste gress som preger vegetasjonen på setervollen. Den er omkranset med barskog på alle kanter. Det utgravde området lå på en voll uten stående bygninger V for seterveien på Melgårdseter. Det ble påvist minst tre tufter (den ene med ildsted), en mødding, en rydningsrøys og to rydningsrøyser som senere er blitt brukt som møddinger. Vollen ble flateavdekket delvis manuelt og delvis med gravemaskin. Det ble i alt avdekket et areal på 1592 m². Utgravingen foregikk ved både av stratigrafisk graving, snitting av enkelte av strukturene samt graving av sjakter. Følgende Cnr tilhører utgravingen på stedet: C.53348-53357.
