Jernframstillingsplassen ble registrert av NIKU i 2001 som et typisk 695-anlegg. Kulturhistorisk museum, Gråfjellprosjektet utførte i perioden 09.07-20.08.2004 arkeologisk undersøkelse av totalt 21 anlegg: jernframstillingsplass (C53992) og 20 kullgroper som antas å ha tilhørighet til anlegget (C53993-C54012). En av kullgropene C54012 ble registrert av Gråfjellprosjektet 2004. Kullgropene ble undersøkt maskinelt og med prøvestikk.
Jernframstillingsplassen ble gravd med en kombinasjon av gravemaskin og manuell graving. Anlegget ble hovedsakelig utgravd etter stratigrafisk graving, mens konstruksjoner som kullgroper, slagghauger og slaggroper ble snittet. To kullgroper ble også flategravd.
Anlegget besto av to avlange parallelle slagghauger, en oval- og to slaggvoller. Området mellom slagghaugene besto av et kullager og malmlager. I tillegg ble det funnet ett kullager under en av de avlange slagghaugene. Det ble påvist til sammen tre ovnsområder i form av slaggroper og slaggavtapping på anlegget. Fire røsteplasser og ett røsteplassfelt lå i utkanten av anlegget i N. Det ble funnet fire ildsteder på jernframstillingsplassen, hvorav det ble påvist brente bein i to av disse. Disse ildstedene var anlagt i ett rektangulært kulturlag tolket som en tuft. NØ for anlegget ble det påvist en liggemile (10926) og en laftet tuft tolket som kullbrennerkoie eller kullhus (100923). Mila og tufta er datert til moderne tid. Rett Ø for liggemila lå en kullgrop med en sekundær funksjon, tolket som mulig groptuft (100922). Anlegget syntes å følge tendensene i organiseringen som er vanlig for anlegg i undersøkelsesområdet.
Undersøkelsen viste at det kunne spores tre sikre bruksfaser på anlegget, to eldre knyttet til jernframstilling og en yngre knyttet til kullmilevirksomhet. Den eldste fasen er ut i fra stratisgrafiske relasjoner knyttet til ovnsområde 100971, slagghaug 100903 og kullager 100972. Ovnene 100941 og 101079 har mest sannsynelig blitt drevet parallelt. Det er imidlertid ingen lagmessige relasjoner mellom de to ovnsområdene som kan gi informasjon om en eller flere faser. Man kan derfor ikke se bort i fra at ovnsområdene representerer to ulike bruksfaser. Liggemila og kullbrennerkoia er begge datert til yngre enn AD1690. Plassen vitner om å ha en tradisjon for jernframstilling og kullbrenning fra middelalder og frem til moderne tid.
