I Statens vegvesen i Møre og Romsdal sitt interne magasin "Veg og Virke" nr. 1/1988 har Ingeborg Åsen Vatten skrevet en artikkel med overskrift "Anders vegvakter". Dette er et sammendrag av det som står i artikkelen.
Anders Gjengstø var bas på et av de arbeidslaga som var med fra 1928 til 1936 og bygde Markavegen mellom Åsskard og Surnadal. Det var for det meste hakke og spade som ble brukt til arbeidet.
Anders gikk fram og tilbake til arbeidet i Betna, for han hadde et lite småbruk der, Hamna i Gjengstøa, som han hadde dyrka opp, og hadde kone og fem barn der. Han ble i 1917 gift med Gurine Halvorsdotter Bele og fikk 5 barn som bodde på småbruket. Det var Gurine som stelte dyra og småbruket når Anders var på vegarbeid.
I sine tidligere år hadde Anders bl.a. vært linegner ombord ei skute fra Tustna. Han arbeidet en liten stund i Kristiansund før han i 1910 reiste over til Amerika. Der ble han i 5 år, mesteparten av tiden i California der han arbeidde på sagbruk. Anders likte seg ikke i Amerika. Varmen var verst og det var tung arbeid.
Etter at han kom hjem arbeidet han lengste tiden på anlegg. Han var vegvokter i Halsa fra 1943 til 1953. Da han sluttet, fikk han et fint fløteservice i sølv fra alle sjåførene i Halsa, fordi han stelte vegene så fint. Vegen har aldri vært så fin, verken før eller senere. Hvert et hål ble fylt i med sand, vaskebrett fantes ikke og redskapen for det meste hakke og spade.
